Belvedere
Belvedere is a town in south east London, England within the London Borough of Bexley. It is positioned south east of Thamesmead and is located approximately 12 miles (19 kilometres) southeast of Charing Cross. Belvedere was in Kent, and still has a Kent postcode. It formed part of the Municipal Borough of Erith prior to 1965 and development work occurred before the Second World War, with significant rebuilding work after the Blitz. In spite of this, Upper Belvedere and the Village still has a great deal of its Victorian and Edwardian appeal and character. Upper Belvedere is the location of a church and several Victorian and Edwardian brick villas. It features numerous traditional pubs, restaurants and retail outlets. These include The Eardley Arms on Woolwich Road, The Vic on Victoria Street, The Royal Standard in the heart of the village plus the Fox in Belvedere village. Upper Belvedere also boasts a large park and a library which was under threat of being shut down as a result of local government cuts. Fortunately this danger has been stopped as a result of the efforts of your local community. A brand new 'Splash Park', which opened in 2005, was a welcomed addition to the village, having been developed on the site of the old Victorian paddling pool. The splash park preserves parts of the original paddling pool structures. From 1898 to 1961, Callender's Cable Works, at the Erith Works, was patron to Callender's Cableworks Band, an amateur brass band formed of employees of the company. The band was a popular broadcaster on BBC Radio in the 1920s and 1930s.
