The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was formed in 1965 when three smaller sized council locations amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This integrated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, along with the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. To the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. According to population estimates made in the middle of 2014, Southwark features a permanent population of about 302538 people.
The borough is home to numerous cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market that are the biggest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich houses the Dulwich Picture Gallery plus the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
