Selkirk
Selkirk is a community as well as historic royal burgh in the Scottish Borders Council area of southeastern Scotland. It lies on the Ettrick Water, a tributary of the River Tweed. The people of the community are called Souters, which means cobblers (footwear manufacturers and healers). At the time of the 2011 census, Selkirk's population was 5,784. Selkirk was formerly the county town of Selkirkshire. Selkirk is among the earliest Royal Burghs in Scotland as well as is the site of the earliest settlements in what is now the Scottish Borders. The town's name implies "church by the hall" from the Old English sele ("hall" or "estate") and also cirice ("church").
