Bingley
Bingley is a market town in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford situated in West Yorkshire, England. The town is positioned on the River Aire plus the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is situated in Airedale on the south of Ilkley Moor. The population has recently witnessed a decline, having a population of 20,000 in 2001 and reducing to around 18,294 as per the 2011 Census. The definition of the town's name is translated as 'Bing's Clearing' and is Saxon in origin. The town's initial settlement served the ford across the River Aire at the narrowest point of the Aire Valley, and Ireland Bridge was constructed in 1986 with the intention of changing the ford. A great deal of the older history of the town is still present in the town, such as the Bingley Grammar School, founded during the sixteenth century, which is thought to be one of the oldest schools in the country. Bingley is home to an abundance of local stores, a street market, banks along with the 'Little Theatre'. There are also efficient transport links available, with a railway station situated in the town centre as well as the Leeds Bradford Airport close by. Barges on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal travel through the Bingley Five Rise Locks, with tourists frequently viewing barges navigating the locks. Because of its largely unspoilt habitat, walking and biking in the town proves popular, and golfers can play at the Bingley St. Ives Golf Club. An annual music festival, Bingley Music Live, is held at Myrtle Park, presenting an array of good quality music attracting a considerable audience.
