Barnard Castle
Barnard Castle is a market community in Teesdale, Area Durham, England. It is named after the castle around which it was built. It is the main settlement in the Teesdale area, as well as is a popular traveler location. The Bowes Museum has the very best collection of European fine and also decorative arts in the North of England, housed in a wonderful 19th-century French-style estate. Its most famous display is the 18th-century Silver Swan automaton, though art includes job by Goya and also El Greco. Barnard Castle remains on the north bank of the River Tees, opposite Startforth and 21 miles (34 kilometres) south-west of the county town of Durham. Neighboring communities include Bishop Auckland to the north-east, Darlington to the east and Richmond in North Yorkshire to the south-east. Barnard Castle's largest single company is GlaxoSmithKline which has a manufacturing facility on the outskirts of community. Barnard Castle is for all purposes (historical, ritualistic and administrative) situated in Region Durham. The region border with the North Riding of Yorkshire was changed in 1967: that part of the community of Barnard Castle traditionally in Yorkshire was added to County Durham. Barnard Castle was the management centre of the former Teesdale area of County Durham till its abolition on 1 April 2009. The town is currently administered by Durham County Council Unitary Authority, as principal authority and also by Barnard Castle Town Council, as a church. The Town Council chooses a ritualistic Town Mayor each year. It belongs to the Bishop Auckland legislative constituency, which as of 2017 is stood for in parliament by Helen Goodman of Labour, though with a tiny bulk over the Conservatives. It remains in the North East England area, which serves as a constituency for the European Parliament. In between 1894 and 1967 the community was administratively part of Barnard Castle Urban Area.
