Bingley is a market town in the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford located in West Yorkshire, England. The town lies on the River Aire as well as the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is located in Airedale to the south of Ilkley Moor. The population has recently witnessed a drop, having a population of about 20,000 in 2001 and decreasing to around 18,294 as recorded in the 2011 Census. The meaning of the town's name is translated as 'Bing's Clearing' and has Saxon origins. The town's original settlement served the ford across the River Aire at the narrowest point of the Aire Valley, and Ireland Bridge was built in 1986 with the intention of replacing the ford. Much of the older history of the town continues to be present in the town, for instance the Bingley Grammar School, founded in the 16th century, which is considered to be 1 of the oldest schools in the country. Bingley boasts an abundance of local retailers, a street market, banks and the 'Little Theatre'. There are also effective transport links in the town, with a railway station situated in the town centre along with the Leeds Bradford Airport close by. Barges on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal travel through the Bingley Five Rise Locks, with tourists frequently observing barges navigating the locks. Because of its mostly unspoilt habitat, walking and biking in the town is popular, and golfers can play at the Bingley St. Ives Golf Club. A yearly music festival, Bingley Music Live, is held at Myrtle Park, boasting a selection of high quality music attracting a considerable audience.
