Devizes is a market town and civil parish in the centre of Wiltshire in England. Situated on a hill at the east side of the Vale of Pewsey, the town is located roughly 10.5 miles (16.9 kilometres) southeast of Chippenham and about 11 miles (18 km) east-north-east of the county town of Trowbridge. In accordance with the 2011 Census, the town has a permanent population of about 11715. Its development has taken place around the 11th century Norman castle. During the 12th and 13th centuries, masters and traders set up businesses to serve the inhabitants of the castle. The very first documented market in Devizes goes back to 1228. The first market was in the large area outside St Mary's Church, rather than in the current Market Place, which then would have been within the castle's outer bailey. Devizes in the present day serves as a centre for banks, lawyers and stores and has an open market place where a market is held once a week on Thursdays. It has nearly 5 hundred listed buildings, which is a a great deal for a town of its size, and some prominent churches, a Town Hall and a green at the heart of the town. The town attracts a reasonable volume of tourism as a result of its distance to Avebury, Stonehenge and Salisbury. Regional destinations feature Wiltshire Museum, Caen Hill Locks, the Kennet and Avon Canal, seasonal crop circles, and the White Horse. The Wadworth Brewery, with its shire horses that deliver Wadworth beer to bars in the region as well as giving rides to the public, runs a visitor centre.
