Artexing in Normanton

Artex is a building material used for surface decorating in home interiors. It is typically chosen to add a textured surface to ceilings. Artex remains in demand as another option to smooth plaster ceilings, and a specialist painter and decorator should have the ability to apply artex in numerous different textured style appearances. Artex refers to a specific brand name, but there are other manufacturers who create similar building materials. Older artex ceilings can be refurbished as well. There are many different materials and applicators available to make this process as easy as possible. There's a wide array of of different choices with regard to the styles of texture that artex may be applied in. It may be administered in stipple, swirl, or shell effects, all of which can be accomplished as a DIY task reasonably easily. Skilled painters and decorators can review with you what result would best go with your room, and make sure that artex is applied in an excellent quality and uniform finish. Artex can even be painted over, and deciding on a shade which suits the texture of the surface area can regenerate an old ceiling and breathe life into a space.

Normanton

Normanton is a town and civil parish in the City of Wakefield in West Yorkshire, England. Having a population of 20872, according to the 2011 Census, Normanton is mainly an expanding commuter town for the Leeds City Region. This is more than likely to be a result of the potential to buy somewhat inexpensive housing, and there are readily available and reliable transport connections. Going to and from the town continues to be sustained by the Normanton train station, which runs regular trains to Leeds, Wakefield and Castleford, together with being served by an unmanned island platform station with routine trains to Leeds, Castleford, Wakefield and Sheffield Meadowhall Interchange. The continuing appeal of the town to commuters is additionally enhanced by the fact that the town is surrounded by 3 main motorway networks. This includes the M62 connecting Liverpool to Hull, the M1 linking Leeds to London, and a brand-new link between the M62 and the A1 at Ferrybridge making it possible for simple access to the North of England. The building and development of the Eurolink Industrial Estate, found at Junction 31 of the M62, turned out especially attractive to a range of national and multi-national corporations, who based their distribution depots in Normanton. Such activity went a long way to boost the town's local economy. There are additionally different leisure options available to the regional population. There is a cricket club, Normanton St. John's C.C., and 2 football teams, consisting of A.S. Normanton F.C. and Normanton Athletic Juniors for younger players. Rugby is argued to be the most popular, or at the very least well-attended, sport in the area, with Normanton Knights playing in the National Conference League. For all your house upgrades, make certain to make use of respected experts in Normanton to make certain of quality.

FAQs

How to paint an artex ceiling?

It’s possible to paint your artex ceiling if you want to smarten it up or make it a different colour.

If it’s never been painted before, you’ll need to paint it with a PVA-based solution or water-thinned paint layer to start with. You may want to scrape or sand off any loose or peeling patches beforehand, but only do this if you’re sure that the artex doesn’t contain any asbestos.

Once you’ve done this, follow with two coats of your paint of choice – ideally an emulsion. If your artex ceiling has been painted before then you can paint directly without priming. However, if you’re painting over a particularly bold colour with a lighter one, you might want apply a layer of white paint first.

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.

Does artex contain asbestos?

Artex was originally made using white asbestos to make it stronger. However, this stopped in the mid-1980s, and the use of asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, due to its extreme health risks. So, any artex you buy today won’t contain asbestos.

If you have an artex ceiling or wall that was created before 1999, it may have asbestos in it. This won’t be a health hazard if you leave it undisturbed, so it’s not necessary to remove it. However, if you want to get rid of or alter your artex ceiling or wall, you must get it tested to check if it has asbestos in or not first. If it does, you’ll need to hire a qualified professional to work on it.

How to artex a ceiling?

Artexing a ceiling can be a tricky job, but whether you’re considering hiring a professional or DIY, it’s helpful to know how it’s done.

Artex is available either in a paste or powder form. The paste is ideal if you’re making small repairs or additions to an existing ceiling. But, if you have a whole ceiling to cover, the powder is more cost effective. When you’re ready to get started, you’ll need to mix the powder up with cold water according to the instructions.

It’s possible to artex over plaster, plasterboard or paint. If you have a plasterboard surface, you should tape and fill any joints or cracks before you begin. Plaster and plasterboard both require a coat of sealant or primer first. You can usually artex straight over paint, but any gloss paint should be sanded down, and any dark paints covered with a layer of white.

Artexing can get quite messy, so make sure you empty the room you’re working in as much as possible, lay down sheets and wear protective clothing and glasses. You might want to practice on a piece of board before you start on the ceiling.

Start by using a brush or roller to cover a 500 square cm area with a generous layer of artex. Then use a brush, comb or roller to create your chosen texture. Every time you do a new section of ceiling, try to blend it with the other sections you’ve done. Don’t be tempted to cover the whole ceiling before you start adding texture – the artex will dry too quickly for you to do it all in time.

Artex usually needs 12-24 hours in a well-ventilated space to dry completely.
