Artexing in Lewisham

Artex is a building material used for surface decorating throughout home interiors. It is commonly used to add a textured surface to ceilings. Artex continues to be popular as another option to smooth plaster ceilings, and an experienced painter and decorator will be able to apply artex in various different textured pattern appearances. Artex describes a specific manufacturer, but there are various other manufacturers who manufacture very similar materials. Older artex ceilings may be refurbished as well. There are a selection of products and applicators available in order to help make this procedure as effortless as possible. There exists a wide array of of different choices when it comes to the types of texture which artex may be used to create. It could be administered in stipple, swirl, or shell effects, all of which can be undertaken as a DIY project reasonably easily. Specialist painters and decorators will be able to review with you which impact would suit your area, and make sure that artex is put on to create a quality and uniform finish. Artex may also be painted over, and selecting a shade which suits the texture of the surface area can improve a tired ceiling and breathe life into a space.

The borough wasformed in 1965, by the London Government Act 1963, as an amalgamation of the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Lewisham as well as the Metropolitan Borough of Deptford, which had been created in 1900 as divisions of the County of London. Nonetheless, minor boundary adjustments have occurred since its creation. One of the most important amendments were made in 1996, when the former part of the Royal Docks in Deptford was transferred from the London Borough of Greenwich.

The local authority is Lewisham London Borough Council and it's based in Catford. The borough covers a total area of around 13.57 square miles. It is surrounded by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to the east, the London Borough of Bromley towards the south along with the London Borough of Southwark towards the west. The River Thames forms a short section of northern boundary together with the Isle of Dogs inside the London Borough of Tower Hamlets. Deptford Creek, Pool River, River Quaggy and River Ravensbourne pass by way of the borough.

As outlined by population estimates produced in the middle of 2014, Lewisham is a borough with about 291933 permanent residents. FAQs

Does artex contain asbestos?

Artex was originally made using white asbestos to make it stronger. However, this stopped in the mid-1980s, and the use of asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, due to its extreme health risks. So, any artex you buy today won’t contain asbestos.

If you have an artex ceiling or wall that was created before 1999, it may have asbestos in it. This won’t be a health hazard if you leave it undisturbed, so it’s not necessary to remove it. However, if you want to get rid of or alter your artex ceiling or wall, you must get it tested to check if it has asbestos in or not first. If it does, you’ll need to hire a qualified professional to work on it.

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.

How to artex a ceiling?

Artexing a ceiling can be a tricky job, but whether you’re considering hiring a professional or DIY, it’s helpful to know how it’s done.

Artex is available either in a paste or powder form. The paste is ideal if you’re making small repairs or additions to an existing ceiling. But, if you have a whole ceiling to cover, the powder is more cost effective. When you’re ready to get started, you’ll need to mix the powder up with cold water according to the instructions.

It’s possible to artex over plaster, plasterboard or paint. If you have a plasterboard surface, you should tape and fill any joints or cracks before you begin. Plaster and plasterboard both require a coat of sealant or primer first. You can usually artex straight over paint, but any gloss paint should be sanded down, and any dark paints covered with a layer of white.

Artexing can get quite messy, so make sure you empty the room you’re working in as much as possible, lay down sheets and wear protective clothing and glasses. You might want to practice on a piece of board before you start on the ceiling.

Start by using a brush or roller to cover a 500 square cm area with a generous layer of artex. Then use a brush, comb or roller to create your chosen texture. Every time you do a new section of ceiling, try to blend it with the other sections you’ve done. Don’t be tempted to cover the whole ceiling before you start adding texture – the artex will dry too quickly for you to do it all in time.

Artex usually needs 12-24 hours in a well-ventilated space to dry completely.

What is artex?

Artex is a type of interior surface coating, similar to plaster. It’s used to create decorative textured finishes on ceilings and walls, so it takes longer to dry than plaster.

Artex is actually a brand name, but it’s used to refer to similar products made by other manufacturers too. It was particularly popular in the 1970s, but is still used to create attractive wall and ceiling finishes today.
