Artexing in Camden

Artex is a product that's used for for decorating surfaces in home interiors. It is normally employed to add a textured surface to ceilings. Artex is still popular as a substitute to smooth plaster ceilings, and a professional painter and decorator can apply artex in various different textured pattern appearances. Artex is a particular manufacturer, but there are some other manufacturers who create equivalent products. Older artex ceilings may be refurbished as well. There are a selection of materials and applicators available for purchase in order to help make this method as easy as possible. There is a wide variety of different alternatives for the varieties of texture that artex could be applied in. Stipple, swirl, or shell effects may be applied, all of which may be executed as a DIY job relatively easily. Professional painters and decorators can consider with you which impact would best match your area, and ensure that artex is applied in a top quality and uniform texture. Artex can also be painted over, and deciding on a colour that goes well with the texture of the surface area can accentuate a tired ceiling and breathe life into a room.

Camden

The London Borough of Camden is a borough in north west London, and forms a part of Inner London. The southern reaches of Camden form a part of central London. The borough was created in 1965 from the former area of the metropolitan boroughs of Hampstead, Holborn, and St Pancras, which had formed part of the County of London. The borough was named after Camden Town, which had gained its name from Charles Pratt, 1st Earl Camden in 1795. The transcribed diaries of William Copeland Astbury, recently made accessible, describe Camden and the surrounding places in great detail from 1829 to 1848. The local authority is Camden London Borough Council.

Neighbouring areas are the City of Westminster plus the City of London towards the south, Brent to the west, Barnet and Haringey to the north and Islington to the east. The borough covers a total area of about 8.4 square miles. There are actually 162 English Heritage blue plaques inside the borough of Camden representing the a lot of diverse personalities which have lived there. The borough is also home to a wide selection of attractions, for instance the Bloomsbury Theatre, Camden Market, the Foundling Museum and Kenwood House.

All bus services are run by Transport for London, and buses serve every single suburb in the borough. Three of the fourteen central London's railway terminals are located in the borough, which are Euston, St. Pancras International and King's Cross.

FAQs

How to paint an artex ceiling?

It’s possible to paint your artex ceiling if you want to smarten it up or make it a different colour.

If it’s never been painted before, you’ll need to paint it with a PVA-based solution or water-thinned paint layer to start with. You may want to scrape or sand off any loose or peeling patches beforehand, but only do this if you’re sure that the artex doesn’t contain any asbestos.

Once you’ve done this, follow with two coats of your paint of choice – ideally an emulsion. If your artex ceiling has been painted before then you can paint directly without priming. However, if you’re painting over a particularly bold colour with a lighter one, you might want apply a layer of white paint first.

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.

Does artex contain asbestos?

Artex was originally made using white asbestos to make it stronger. However, this stopped in the mid-1980s, and the use of asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999, due to its extreme health risks. So, any artex you buy today won’t contain asbestos.

If you have an artex ceiling or wall that was created before 1999, it may have asbestos in it. This won’t be a health hazard if you leave it undisturbed, so it’s not necessary to remove it. However, if you want to get rid of or alter your artex ceiling or wall, you must get it tested to check if it has asbestos in or not first. If it does, you’ll need to hire a qualified professional to work on it.

How to artex a ceiling?

Artexing a ceiling can be a tricky job, but whether you’re considering hiring a professional or DIY, it’s helpful to know how it’s done.

Artex is available either in a paste or powder form. The paste is ideal if you’re making small repairs or additions to an existing ceiling. But, if you have a whole ceiling to cover, the powder is more cost effective. When you’re ready to get started, you’ll need to mix the powder up with cold water according to the instructions.

It’s possible to artex over plaster, plasterboard or paint. If you have a plasterboard surface, you should tape and fill any joints or cracks before you begin. Plaster and plasterboard both require a coat of sealant or primer first. You can usually artex straight over paint, but any gloss paint should be sanded down, and any dark paints covered with a layer of white.

Artexing can get quite messy, so make sure you empty the room you’re working in as much as possible, lay down sheets and wear protective clothing and glasses. You might want to practice on a piece of board before you start on the ceiling.

Start by using a brush or roller to cover a 500 square cm area with a generous layer of artex. Then use a brush, comb or roller to create your chosen texture. Every time you do a new section of ceiling, try to blend it with the other sections you’ve done. Don’t be tempted to cover the whole ceiling before you start adding texture – the artex will dry too quickly for you to do it all in time.

Artex usually needs 12-24 hours in a well-ventilated space to dry completely.
