Artexing in Leigh-on-sea

Artex is a product that's used for for surface decorating in the interior of homes. It is normally made use of to apply a textured surface to ceilings. Artex remains fashionable instead of smooth plaster ceilings, and a qualified painter and decorator should have the ability to apply artex in various different textured style appearances. Artex relates to a particular manufacturer, but there are different manufacturers who manufacture very similar products. Older artex ceilings can be refurbished as well. There are various materials and applicators available for purchase to help make this procedure as easy as possible. There is a wide selection of different choices when it comes to the varieties of texture which artex may be used to produce. Stipple, swirl, or shell effects could be administered, all of which could be done as a DIY job reasonably easily. Specialist painters and decorators can discuss with you which finish would best match your space, and guarantee that artex is put on in a superior quality and uniform surface. Artex can also be painted over, and deciding on a shade that goes with the texture of the surface can revitalize a tired ceiling and breathe life into an area.

Leigh-on-sea

Leigh-on-Sea is a civil parish in Essex. It is a district of Southend-on-Sea, with its own town council, and is at present the only civil parish within the borough. The town is positioned on the northern edge of the Thames estuary, being merely a few miles from the open waters of the North Sea and from the Kent coast. Featuring on the town's coastal area is a nature reserve at Two Tree Island and a centrally located beach close to Bell Wharf. Leigh's foreshore is mostly viewed as being an area with significant mud flats and creeks when the water is at low tide. Between the 1870s and the 1920s, Broadway, previously a residential street, was converted into a commercial parade of shopfronts. In the 1930s, London Road and Leigh Road equally ended up being acknowledged as commercial roads, holding outlets, workshops, industrial properties, and leisure sites. Because of the prominence of 24 Hr grocery stores and online shopping from the 1990s, much of the town's independent small business underwent redevelopment, with bars, cafés, restaurants, galleries and gift shops replacing the majority of the traditional shops. On-going urban regeneration continues to entice brand-new citizens to the town, along with planning to accommodate for the increase in Southend's increased population. With a population of over 20000, Leigh was graded by Rightmove's 2016 Happy at Home Index as the happiest place to live in Great Britain, with attention being drawn to the strong community spirit, a sense of belonging, and excellent access to sports and arts ventures. A range of local events are well established, such as the Leigh Regatta, taking place over one September weekend, the Leigh Folk Festival and the Leigh Art Trail. For all of your house upgrades, make sure to make use of dependable contractors in Leigh-on-Sea to make certain of quality.

FAQs

What is artex?

Artex is a type of interior surface coating, similar to plaster. It’s used to create decorative textured finishes on ceilings and walls, so it takes longer to dry than plaster.

Artex is actually a brand name, but it’s used to refer to similar products made by other manufacturers too. It was particularly popular in the 1970s, but is still used to create attractive wall and ceiling finishes today.

How to paint an artex ceiling?

It’s possible to paint your artex ceiling if you want to smarten it up or make it a different colour.

If it’s never been painted before, you’ll need to paint it with a PVA-based solution or water-thinned paint layer to start with. You may want to scrape or sand off any loose or peeling patches beforehand, but only do this if you’re sure that the artex doesn’t contain any asbestos.

Once you’ve done this, follow with two coats of your paint of choice – ideally an emulsion. If your artex ceiling has been painted before then you can paint directly without priming. However, if you’re painting over a particularly bold colour with a lighter one, you might want apply a layer of white paint first.

Can you plaster over artex?

If your artex ceiling is looking tired or you just fancy a change, you can try plastering over your artex. You have two options when it comes to plastering over your artex: plasterboard or skimming.

Covering your ceiling with plasterboard is a good option if you suspect the artex may contain asbestos. If done carefully, it doesn’t involve disturbing the artex, reducing the risk of asbestos exposure.

You also have the option to skim over your ceiling. The first steps to this involve removing loose and flaking parts, cutting off stipples and sanding your ceiling down. So, if there’s a chance your artex ceiling may contain asbestos, this isn’t the right solution for you. However, if you’re sure there’s no asbestos in your ceiling, then sanding down and skimming over your ceiling can be a great way to create an attractive result.

It’s worth noting that both putting up plasterboard and skimming plaster can be difficult jobs. Although possible to DIY, you’re likely to get much better results if you hire a professional.

How to artex a ceiling?

Artexing a ceiling can be a tricky job, but whether you’re considering hiring a professional or DIY, it’s helpful to know how it’s done.

Artex is available either in a paste or powder form. The paste is ideal if you’re making small repairs or additions to an existing ceiling. But, if you have a whole ceiling to cover, the powder is more cost effective. When you’re ready to get started, you’ll need to mix the powder up with cold water according to the instructions.

It’s possible to artex over plaster, plasterboard or paint. If you have a plasterboard surface, you should tape and fill any joints or cracks before you begin. Plaster and plasterboard both require a coat of sealant or primer first. You can usually artex straight over paint, but any gloss paint should be sanded down, and any dark paints covered with a layer of white.

Artexing can get quite messy, so make sure you empty the room you’re working in as much as possible, lay down sheets and wear protective clothing and glasses. You might want to practice on a piece of board before you start on the ceiling.

Start by using a brush or roller to cover a 500 square cm area with a generous layer of artex. Then use a brush, comb or roller to create your chosen texture. Every time you do a new section of ceiling, try to blend it with the other sections you’ve done. Don’t be tempted to cover the whole ceiling before you start adding texture – the artex will dry too quickly for you to do it all in time.

Artex usually needs 12-24 hours in a well-ventilated space to dry completely.
