Wooden Decking in Carluke

Wooden decking is an increasingly popular choice for creating outdoor seating areas in gardens. Because of the natural beauty of wood, they can be very elegant spaces that can be used year round by adding additional heating and lighting. Wooden decking is usually installed in locations in front of patio or French doors where they can create a smooth transition between interior and exterior spaces. Wooden decking can come in virtually any size or shape to accommodate any area. Curved designs or large areas joined by pathways can create a striking effect. Wooden decking is relatively easy to install and causes little disruption, particularly when compared to alternatives like patio or paving. It can even be installed over the top of an existing patio. It is critical however to be certain that your wooden decking is structurally sound and able to take the weight of any furniture or plants that you want to use on the decking. There is a collection of varieties of wood that can be used in wooden decking. Often decking is made of hardwood, but there are softwoods available that fulfil the durability specifications. As hardwood decking will demand maintenance, which generally will involve yearly cleaning and staining for weather proofing, composite woods have become more popular for use in wooden decking because they are more robust and require far less maintenance.

Carluke

Carluke is a town situated in the centre of the Lanarkshire countryside in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It is 4.7 miles northwest of Lanark and 4.2 miles southeast of Wishaw, sitting on a high plateau overseeing the River Clyde, directly in the middle of Lanarkshire's fruit growing region. According to a population survey in 2008, it has a permanent population of about 19500, which makes it the Clyde Valley's most populated town. Carluke's expansion began most quickly through the time of the industrial revolution, with corn milling, cotton weaving, coal mining plus the manufacture of bricks, glass, confectionary and jam becoming the town's most substantial industries. Today, Carluke is predominantly a commuting town. The town is served by dual carriageways connecting it to the M8 and M74, and it also benefits from frequent trains to Lanark, Motherwell, Hamilton, Glasgow and Edinburgh. Despite this, you will find a number of important employers based in the town. On account of Carluke's close proximity to Clyde Valley's important fruit growers, the jam company, Renshaw Scott, is a significant employer, which developed further by recently adding a chocolate refinery to their plant. Significant redevelopment works have been completed in the town since the start of the 21st century. There's a sizeable quantity of independent shops and supermarkets within the vibrant and newly regenerated town centre, with residents of neighbouring villages, such as Braidwood, Forth, Kilncadzow and Law, taking advantage of the wide selection of shops and services that may be discovered in Carluke. In 2010, a '1.1 million indoor soft play and cafe', 'The Bubbles Factory', was constructed, which was voted 'The best Play in the UK'. For all of your house upgrades, make sure that you employ trustworthy professionals in Carluke to ensure you get the most effective quality.

FAQs

Will I need safety barriers or balustrades for my decking?

If your deck isn’t going to be flat to the ground, it’s a good idea to have some kind of balustrade to avoid any tripping. If the gap between the deck and the ground is less than 600mm, use a 900mm balustrade. If it’s higher than 600mm, the balustrade should be 1100mm tall.

How much maintenance will a wooden deck need?

Properly installed wooden decking will not need a lot of maintenance. Most manufacturers recommend regularly brushing leaves and dirt off the deck, and a yearly cleaning and staining procedure. This will keep the wood in the best condition. Fluids and treatments are readily available from all DIY shops and stores.

How to fit composite decking?
Fitting composite decking is similar to installing timber decking, but there are some small differences in terms of the gaps you need to leave between boards and the screws you use. We’ll go through a quick guide to show you the process involved in fitting composite decking so you can decide whether it’s something you want to do yourself. Prepare the area Prepare the area according to our instructions in the previous FAQs – or you can use an existing patio or concrete base if you have one. Measure and mark out the area using chalk (if using an existing base). Assemble the decking frame Build the outer frame as we show in our FAQs above; if the area you have planned is longer than your joists, you’ll need to join them together. When you’ve built the frame and it’s secure, ensure that it’s at the right level for water runoff and add risers, slabs or treated off-cuts of timber at 500mm intervals if you need to. Add joists The spacing of your joists will depend on the type of design you have chosen for your composite decking. If you’re laying arched boards horizontally, you’ll need to space the joists 300mm apart. Lay your composite decking boards
  1. If you’ve not got an overhang or it’s a fixed deck, fit starter clips along the outside edge of the frame and secure with screws provided with the composite decking. If you are working with an overhang, put the first board into position not exceeding 25mm. If you’re adding a fascia, put an off-cut of board under the overhang so you know it’ll be flush with the fascia.
  2. Pre-drill all fixing points, measuring in 30mm from the edge of the board. Secure the board to the joist below with composite decking screws.
  3. Slide a hidden fastener clip in so it sits within the groove of the deck board. It needs to be in the centre of the joist to keep the boards secure and ensure an expansion gap of 6mm. Tighten the clips until just tight, and repeat so there’s a clip at every joist.
  4. Add the next board, ensuring that the fastener clips sit within the groove – make sure you don’t force it. Repeat step 3.
  5. Continue steps 3 and 4 until you’re at the final board, which you should secure in the same way as you did the first.
Add a fascia board If you’re adding a fascia, measure in 40mm from each end and add two guide marks: one at 40mm from the top and the other at 40mm from the bottom. Connect the marks, then mark at 300mm intervals down the board. Drill pilot holes, then put the fascia board into position. You need to make sure that there’s a 40mm ventilation gap between the bottom of the fascia and the ground. Ask someone to hold the board level until you’ve finished securing it with composite decking screws; you can get colour-matched ones so they don’t look unsightly at the end of your decking. Not so sure you want to carry out such a big project yourself? Get quotes from decking pros who will be able to fit composite decking much more quickly and easily.
How to lay decking?
Laying simple, ground-level decking may sound intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. With careful planning and preparation, you can lay decking that you’ll be proud to show off to neighbours, family and friends. Here are a few tips to get you started. Plan carefully Draw out a plan, to scale, on paper. This will help you to know how many boards you’ll need and ensure that you don’t end up having to cut anything to fit. Prepare the area Measure out the site according to your plan and hammer a peg into each corner, then tie string around each peg to help you see what you’re working with. If you’re not laying on existing slabs, dig into the ground, lifting out turf if it’s there, and check that the site is level. Then add concrete slabs for more stability or lay weed-control fabric over the ground and cover with gravel to further prevent weed growth. Build your sub-frame Since a lot of people ask this, we’ve got a more detailed guide in the FAQ below. Lay your deck boards
  1. Start in one corner of the sub-frame and position the first board across the inner joists. You want the deck board in the opposite direction to the inner joists, ensuring that it’s flush with the frame. Position any end-to-end joins between the deck boards halfway across an inner joist so you can screw both boards into the joist for stability. Make sure you keep a gap of between 5-8mm to allow for expansion of the wood.
  2. Begin to screw your deck boards to the joists. You’ll need to secure the deck board to every joist is covers along your deck frame. Use two screws for every joist. Mark where you’re going to add your screws, ensuring that they are at least 15mm from the end of the board and 20mm from the outside edges. Drill pilot holes for the screws, being careful to only drill through the deck board and not the joist. Then screw the decking screws into the holes.
  3. Continue to screw in the deck boards, ensuring you leave the correct expansion gap. You can stagger the deck board joins across the deck for more strength.
  4. Sand down any cut ends if you need to before applying decking preserver to protect the timber from rotting.
Although this is a simplified set of instructions, it’s enough for you to see whether you want to attempt to lay decking yourself – and if you don’t, you can get in touch with professionals who will be happy to give you a quote.
