The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was established in 1965 when 3 smaller sized council locations amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This integrated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and also the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. All districts of the area are inside the London postal district.
The borough covers an overall area of about 11.14 square miles. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Southwark has a wide selection of housing, which includes council housing, such as the post-Blitz Aylesbury Estate and also the Heygate Estate to supply houses to low-income residents. The borough is home to several cultural, historical and notable attractions. Dulwich hosts the Dulwich Picture Gallery and also the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
