Bridgnorth

Bridgnorth is a town inside the English county of Shropshire. In the Severn Valley, it is divided into High Town and Low Town. The names of these two areas refer to their elevations relative to the River Severn, which splits the higher town on the right bank from the lower to the left. As per the 2011 Census, the permanent resident population of Bridgnorth is around 12,079, which has risen slightly from the roughly 11,891 recorded at the time of the 2001 Census. Bridgnorth features a cliff railway, the Castle Hill Railway, which connects the high and low halves of the town. This is the steepest and only inland railway of its kind in the country. As well as this, is the Bridgnorth Railway Station, found within the High Town on the Severn Valley Railway, which runs southwards to Kidderminster. The ruins of Bridgnorth Castle, constructed in 1101, have to this day, not been found in the town. As a result of damage caused through the English Civil War, the castle is said to be on an incline of 15 degrees. High Town is dominated by two Church of England churches. St. Mary's Church, a church developed and constructed in the style of the late 18th century by Thomas Telford, is still utilised for worship. St. Leonard's was previously collegiate, and Bridgnorth was Royal Peculiar until 1856. It was subsequently reconstructed, however it is no longer used for regular worship. It still has many uses in the neighbourhood and it is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust. There are several sports opportunities for those living in Bridgnorth, and it's famed in Shropshire for possessing the most successful table tennis club in the county. For all your house improvements, be sure that you utilise trusted specialists in Bridgnorth to ensure that you get a great quality service.

FAQs

How much is it to repair the glass in a window?
Accidents happen, and sometimes windows get broken. And that will lead to you wanting to replace just the glass in your window, rather than the whole frame. Also, as windows get older they can mist up on the inside, which means that the unit has ‘blown’ - so you’ll also need to replace the glass. But how much is it to replace the glass in a window? Luckily, if the frame of your window is in good condition, there’s no need to replace it, and this will reduce the cost. For an installer to fit a new pane of glass in a single glazed window, the average cost is £100, while a replacement double glazed sealed unit will cost an average of £110. Of course, as this is an average, if your window is very large you may spend more, and if your window is very small the price may be less. That's why it’s important to get a range of quotes so you can compare costs and get the best price. If you’re good at DIY, you may feel confident enough to have a go at replacing the glass in your window yourself. In that case, the cost of sealed unit and any other materials you need will cost an average of £57. It’s a significant saving, and if you think you can do it, then give it a try. However, if you’re in any way unsure, it’s best to leave it to the professionals. A window installer will be able to replace the glass in your window in less than an hour. Even though it costs more for a professional to do it, if you get it wrong and have to start over it will cost you more in the long run.
Can you repair blown double glazed windows?

You can only repair blown double glazed windows in the sense that you can replace the sealed unit (the glass part of the window) instead of having to replace the entire window.

When a double glazed window is blown, it means that the seal around the window has failed and is now letting air in and out. Often the first sign that the sealed unit has blown is condensation on the inside of the window, which is annoying since there’s no way to get rid of it! When your sealed unit has blown, you’ll be losing heat out of the window, meaning you could be spending more on your energy bills.

As a temporary fix, you could see if you can buy a misting repair kit online, but the condensation will eventually occur again as the air gets in. The best thing to do is ask a window installer or glazier to replace the sealed unit for you.

It's simple to replace the glass in a window – the specialist will remove the beading around the window, remove the blown glass from your window frame and set it to one side. They will then clean up around the frame before adding spacers in, then fitting the new sealed unit into the frame. They’ll make sure it’s a snug fit before replacing the beading back around the window to secure it.

There's no reason to put off repairing a blown double glazed window since the cost is generally much less than replacing the entire thing. A sealed unit with installation costs an average of £100, whereas a completely new window will cost around £400. You’ll soon notice that it’s less draughty and will be able see out of your window once you’ve had the blown glass replaced.

What to put over a broken window?
A broken window is a nuisance and an unwanted expense, and it can often happen at the worst times, like overnight when installers aren’t available or when the weather is very bad. So you might need to put something over your broken window as a temporary measure before someone can come and replace it – but what should you use? If you’ve got a small crack, you could try using some masking tape. Cover the entire crack with the tape making sure that there is extra tape at each end of the crack. This will help to prevent the crack from growing further. However, this isn’t going to work on large impact cracks or shattered windows. For a shattered window, you need to make sure you remove all the remaining glass as the shards could easily cut someone. To make a broken window like this safe, you’ll need:
  • Thick gloves
  • A hammer
  • A broom
  • A vacuum cleaner
  • Thick-soled shoes
  • Safety goggles
  1. Put your gloves on and use the hammer to remove the rest of the glass. Make sure you hit the glass away from you.
  2. Using the broom, sweep away any loose glass from the area, making sure you do both inside and outside.
  3. Use your vacuum cleaner to remove any small pieces of glass that you might not have been able to see.
Once you’ve cleared up the mess, you’ll want to cover your broken window with plastic and tape. It’s only a temporary measure so make sure you get in touch with a professional as soon as possible. Cut some heavy-duty plastic to fit the entire window. Using duct tape, secure the plastic over the window and make sure all the sides are sealed properly. It’s best to ensure that the plastic stays taught over the frame so it doesn’t get caught by the wind. Make sure you get in touch with a glazier or window installer as soon as you can – you'll notice a draught very quickly and someone could easily come and rip the plastic off. If you’re very worried about this you might want to add a chipboard over the top to make it more secure.

Can the glass in a double glazed window be replaced?
Yes, the glass in a double glazed window can be replaced. The glass in a window, or sealed unit to use its proper name, is not permanently attached to your window frames so if it gets damaged but your frames are still intact, there’s no need to replace the whole window. The glass in your double glazed window might need to be replaced due to:
  • Impact from a stone or other object smashing the glass in a ‘bullseye’ effect
  • The result of a break-in
  • Extreme weather or changes in pressure causing a crack
  • The sealed unit being ‘blown’, meaning that it’s no longer energy efficient due to air leaking out
A lot of window installers will replace the glass in your double glazing for you, but you might need to get quotes from specialist glaziers too. Glaziers deal purely with the glass in windows rather than installing entire frames. It won’t take a professional very long to replace the glass in your window. They will remove the beading from around the window with a pallet knife or chisel, leaving the top one until last to keep the sealed unit stable. Then, they simply lift out the glass carefully and will discuss with you whether the removal of the old sealed unit is included in their quote. Next, they will brush away any dust and debris that’s made its way into the frame and place spacers at the bottom. They will then lift the new glass into the frame, making sure it’s completely square. When they’re happy, they’ll remove the spacers and replace the beading back in reverse order. You’ll notice the replacement glass in your new window straight away as draughts should be eliminated and you’ll be able to see clearly again!
