Bargoed

Bargoed is a town within the Rhymney Valley, one of the South Wales Valleys. It's positioned along the Rhymney River in the county borough of Caerphilly, and it covers the ancient border of Glamorgan and Monmouthshire, with Bargoed originally lying inside the old county of Glamorganshire whereas Aberbargoed was within the old county of Monmouthshire. It is unsurprising, therefore, that the English meaning of the town's name is 'border'. According to the 2011 Census, the town has a population of roughly 11900. Traditionally a market town, Bargoed developed into a prominent town soon after the establishment of a colliery in 1903. By 1921, Bargoed had a population of approximately 17,901; it has been progressively declining ever since that time, because the overall demand for Welsh coal faded. The colliery, which was the object of a painting by L. S. Lowry, shut down in the 1980s, and its former site has been transformed a country park. The town has in recent years been undergoing a major redevelopment program, which included a bypass running through the valley with links to the town centre. The conversion of the Grade II* listed Hanbury Street Baptist chapel into a public library is one of the most recognisable characteristics of the redevelopment, which consists of a council services helpdesk, a computer suite, a coffee lounge, along with a compact chapel. The pipe organ is still situated in its traditional dominant position looking over the main ground floor area, whilst the Erstwhile chapel gallery possesses a considerable collection of reference and other books. For all of your residence improvement work, be certain that you use reputable specialists in Bargoed to make sure that you get the top quality service.

FAQs

Why are double glazed windows better than single glazed?

Double glazed windows are better than single glazed generally because they are more energy efficient. The clue’s in the name – double glazed windows have two panes of glass while single glazed windows only have one. In double glazed windows, there is a space between the two glass panes. This space is filled with inert gas or a tight vacuum, which helps to provide an extra level of insulation. That means that heat won’t escape your home easily, nor will it creep in, so you can keep your home at a more comfortable temperature.

The extra pane of glass also helps to increase your home’s security. Single glazing is pretty easy to smash through, whereas it will take much more effort to smash double glazing and will create more noise, so burglars might be put off.

Another reason why double glazed windows are better than single glazed ones is that they help to reduce noise. Of course, if you live by a busy road you’ll still hear some traffic noise, but it can be significantly reduced buy double glazing. In the same way that the inert gas in the middle of the two panes keeps heat in and the cold out, it also helps keep noise out.

With double glazing, you’ll also notice much less condensation. With single glazing, it’s common to see condensation on the inside of the windows, especially when the heating is on. This is because the outside of the window is cold, but the inside is warm. With double glazing, the insulation between the two panes stops there being such a difference in temperature between the inside and outside of the window.

Will a new double glazed window look different to existing ones?

It depends on a few factors whether a new double glazed window will look different to existing ones. If your existing windows are very old, perhaps 10 years or more, then it’s likely that there will be some small differences.

The first thing to remember is that your double glazing is exposed to the elements as soon as it’s installed. So over time, unless you’re very good at cleaning and maintaining your windows, they’re likely to look a bit dirty. Window frames that are south-facing may also become slightly discoloured from the sun, so if you install a new window right next to it you might notice a difference.

Also, there have been lots of technical advances in windows over the years. If your existing windows are significantly older, you might notice a difference in the handles on openers, and if your existing windows were installed before 2010 they might not have trickle vents, which is an extra strip on the inside of your window to keep air flowing through your home. While it’s not a legal requirement for replacement windows to have trickle vents if the original one didn’t, it’s a good idea to have them installed as they help prevent condensation and mould.

The only truly noticeably different elements to a new double glazed window compared with existing ones are likely to be on the inside, which might not be a problem for you if you only have one window in a room. However, if you know the brand of your existing windows, you can ask your window installer if they can source the same ones. Even if they’ve been updated slightly, the difference should be minimal.

How much is a single window?
Sometimes accidents happen, and that leads to you needing to replace just a single window. Luckily, most window fitters are happy to replace just one window if you need to. But how much a single window costs will depend on a few factors. Firstly, do you need the entire window, including the frame, replaced, or just the sealed unit? If the frame is still in good condition, glaziers and some window installers can replace the sealed unit and this will set you back around £250. If your window frame is damaged, don’t try to get away with not replacing it. Having a broken window frame can let heat escape your home, increasing your energy bills, and you’re likely to hear more traffic noise. Plus, if the frame is broken you might have trouble closing the window properly, stopping you from keeping your home secure. So how much is a single window if you need the whole thing replaced? You should expect it to cost between £400-£550, but it could cost more or less than this depending on your location, the size of the window and how tricky it is to replace. There are other factors that will impact the cost of replacing a single window. Do you want the window to have plain, leaded or Georgian bar glass? Maybe it will be a casement window, or a bay, bow or sash? The cost will increase if you want more than one opener if it’s a large window, and if you want it to have locks. Also, the standard white uPVC frame colour will probably be included in the price, but if you want a woodgrain look or a different colour uPVC this will cost more.

How much does one double glazed window cost?
How much one double glazed window costs is based on a few factors. If you just want to buy the window to install yourself, it will cost less than if you want an installer to fit it for you. If you want to simply buy one double glazed window without installation it could cost anywhere between £100-£300. That’s for a simple casement window, but other types like sash or tilt and turn windows could cost more. It’s recommended that you get a reputable installer to fit your double glazed windows because they’ve had the relevant training and will be able to install it much more quickly. How much it will cost for them to install one double glazed window will very based on your location, the type of window, how difficult the window is to access and whether you choose standard white uPVC or a coloured or woodgrain effect. An average uPVC casement window might cost somewhere between £300-£400, while a dual turn window might cost between £550-£660 to install. Do you really need to replace the entire window? If it’s just the double glazing that needs replacing, for example if it’s misted up inside, this will cost much less. Most window installers or a glazier will be able to just replace the sealed unit inside, and that may cost as little as £250. It’s always best to get a range of quotes from reputable companies so you know you’ve got a great price and you’re sure you’ll get excellent service.
