Solar Panel Installer FAQs

How much is the Powerwall 2?
The Tesla Powerwall 2.0 is the second solar battery storage system from Elon Musk’s EV and clean energy company. It’s larger and more expensive than the original Powerwall, but it can store more electricity. So how much is the Powerwall 2.0? With installation, it will set you back between £6,500 and £9,000. But is it worth it? We’ll go through some of the top features so you can make your decision. The Powerwall 2 has a huge useable capacity of 13.5kWh. Most other solar batteries on the market have a capacity of around 4-6.5kWh, so it’s no surprise that it’s also one of the most expensive. If you’ve got a standard-size solar panel system on an average-sized home, you might not need a battery with such a big storage capacity. The Tesla Powerwall 2.0 is the only solar battery available in the UK to provide your home with an uninterruptable power supply (UPS) if you add the Backup Gateway 2. This means that if there’s a power cut, you won’t lose power – because your battery will keep running. It can also scan the weather forecast, so if there’s a storm it will ensure that your solar panels charge the battery in case you get a power cut. So while the Powerwall 2 is the probably the most expensive solar battery you can buy in the UK, if you live in a part of the country with a particular problem the power cuts or you have a large solar panel system, it might just be worth spending the money on it.
Are commercial solar panels worth it?

Solar panels can be pretty expensive, so require an initial investment. However, a quality solar panel installation can be very financially beneficial, saving you money in the long run. It does this in two main ways.

Firstly, using electricity generated by your solar panels means that you have to use less power from the national grid. Once you’ve bought your solar panels, your solar electricity is essentially free, meaning that you’re saving money by using this instead of power supplied by your energy company. If you want to maximise these savings, invest in a solar battery so you can store unused solar electricity ready for when you need it.

You can also earn money with your commercial solar panels through the Smart Export Guarantee [https://solar-panels.quotatis.co.uk/smart-export-guarantee/]. This is a government scheme that says that all licenced energy suppliers with 150,000 customers or more have to offer a tariff to renewable energy generators. When you generate solar electricity but don’t use it immediately it gets fed back to the grid – the tariff pays you for every kWh of this.

At the moment there’s no minimum tariff that an energy company has to offer – it only has to be above zero. However, many energy companies are competing to offer the best deal, so you can definitely find a tariff that will pay you for all the unused solar electricity you generate.

What are solar thermal panels?

Solar thermal panels are panels that can be used to heat your hot water. The collectors, which are either evacuated tube panels or flat plate collectors, harness heat from the sun and transfer it to a heat transfer liquid that heats up water that is stored in a hot water cylinder. You can use a boiler or immersion heater as a back-up in the winter or to heat the water up further to reach the right temperature.

Evacuated tube panels involve a bank of glass tubes mounted on the roof tiles, and while they’re usually more expensive, they’re more efficient than flat plate collectors. They’re exactly what they sound like – flat panels that can be fixed onto your roof tiles or integrated into the roof.

Having a solar thermal system will reduce your energy bills since heat from the sun is free, so you won’t have to rely on your traditional heating as much. You’ll also be doing your bit for the environment – if you have a natural gas heating system, you could save up to 295kg of CO2 every year.

Another benefit to solar thermal panels is that you might be eligible for payments through the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which is a Government scheme to encourage people to take up renewable heating technologies. As long as you have your system installed by an MCS-registered installer and you meet a few other requirements, you could receive payments of up to £525 per year for seven years. And since the average solar thermal panel system costs £5,500, you could pay off over half of your system just with these payments. That’s not even considering that you could save up to £60 a year on your energy bills if you have a gas system.

Which commercial property are 4-10kW commercial solar panels best for?

It’s important to get the right size solar panel system for your commercial property. Solar panels are usually installed on pitched roofs, although they can be fitted on stands on the ground if you have some unused outdoor space. The more panels you install, the more power you’ll generate, but there’s no point buying more panels than you have space for.

Solar panel system sizes are measured in kW. 4-10kW solar panel systems are usually too big for domestic properties but are ideal for smaller commercial properties. Here’s an idea of how many panels and space you’ll need for a few different system sizes:

System size, Number of panels, Area required (approximate)

4kW, 16, 23m²

6kW, 24, 35m²

8kW, 32, 46m²

10kw, 40, 58m²

Bear in mind that solar panels can’t be less than 30cm away from a roof edge, so you’ll need more space than the area that the panels take up.

Is there enough sun for solar panels in the UK?

It may be hard to believe with the summers we have in the UK, but there is more than enough sunlight to power solar panels. Solar PV (photovoltaic) panels operate in daylight, rather than needing direct rays from the sun so they’ll work throughout the year.

Can solar panels cause fires?
It’s only likely that solar panels will cause fires if they are installed incorrectly. The safest thing to do is ask an MCS-registered engineer to install your panels as they have all the relevant qualifications and training in handling electricity. If you choose a reputable company that can prove they have the right certifications, it’s highly unlikely that your solar panels will cause a fire. It’s important to remember that solar PV panels can’t start a fire themselves. It’s other parts that could become faulty that would then lead to a fire. For example, if the connectors in the system aren’t seamed properly, it could cause arcing and overheating, which could then cause the panels to set alight. Another possibility is that the junction box overheats and starts a fire. The junction box is found on the rear side of the solar panel and enables the electrical connection via a connector. Of course, since solar panels harness electricity, there is always a small fire risk – just like there is with any electrical appliance in your home. But there are some precautions you can take to reduce your risk of fire from solar panels:
  • Don’t buy cheap solar panels – while it might seem tempting, make sure you choose MCS-certified solar panels. Any reputable installer will recommend high quality solar panels, which is another reason to have them professionally installed rather than doing it yourself.
  • Ensure that your installer uses non-combustible mounting systems and frames.
  • Check your system regularly for signs of pests gnawing through cables.
  • Keep your solar panel system regularly maintained with proper testing and servicing carried out as recommended by your installer.
  • If something doesn’t look right to you, get in touch with your installer and ask – they should be more than happy to help.
Does solar thermal generate electricity?

No – solar thermal doesn’t generate electricity. Unlike solar PV, solar thermal panels harness the sun’s energy and convert it into heat which is then transferred into your home.

You can have evacuated tube solar thermal panels or flat plate collectors; evacuated tubes are thought to be more efficient that flat plate collectors. They both work by using the sun’s rays to heat a transfer fluid, usually made from water and a type of antifreeze, which is pumped to a heat exchanger inside a water tank in your home. The heat from the exchanger heats the water inside your tank, then when the liquid releases its heat it’s transferred back to the collectors to start the whole process again.

You’ll need to use your solar thermal panel system with a boiler, collector or immersion heater. This is so that the water can be stored and used for your hot water and heating, and also because in the UK, people generally need to rely on another source of heating in the winter. There are fewer sunlight hours in the winter months, so it’s not often possible for solar thermal panels to generate enough heat from the sun to get your water up to temperature.

Whatever the time of year it is, you might want to heat the water up further than your solar panels can manage. That’s why you’ll still need a form of traditional hot water heating, but you should see savings on your energy bills. If you’re currently using natural gas, you can expect savings of around £60 per year on your fuel bills, while if you’re using LPG it could be as high as £100 pr year

Who makes solar thermal panels?

There are a few trusted companies in the UK that make solar panels. While there are other solar thermal panels out there that are made by Chinese and American companies, we’ll focus on the brands with a longstanding presence in the UK since these are the panels MCS-registered solar companies are likely to recommend to you.

Viessmann, Worcester Bosch, Solar UK and Dimplex make some of the best solar thermal panels in the UK. Dimplex and Viessmann offer both flat plate and evacuated tube solar panels, while Solar UK only offers evacuated tubes. Worcester Bosch’s Greenskies range are all flat plate collectors. Viessmann’s panels come with a 5-year warranty, while Worcester Bosch and Dimplex offer extensive 10-year warranties. However, Solar UK offer a comprehensive 25-year warranty and guarantee that the panels will deliver the same level of performance for 25 years!

We’d recommend choosing evacuated tube solar thermal panels because they are the most efficient. While there won’t be much difference between evacuated tubes and flat plates in the summer, in the winter evacuated tubes are much better at taking heat from the sun than flat plates. Since our winters are long and cold with few daylight hours, we think it makes sense to go with evacuated tubes. However, if your priority is looks over maximising efficiency, you might want to choose flat plate collectors since they sit flat on the roof and look more like solar PV panels, whereas the evacuated tubes will stick out.
