Solar Panel Installer FAQs

Do I need planning permission for solar thermal panels?

Most domestic solar thermal panels do not need planning permission and are covered by permitted development rights. There are restrictions on the size and location of these systems. If you live in a conservation area or listed building, or want to install a very large solar thermal system, check with your local authority to see if you will need planning permission.

Do solar panels require maintenance?

You shouldn’t need to maintain your solar panels much at all as long as there’s nothing piled up on top of the panels that could block out the sun. They are installed at an angle, so when it rains the water runs off them and gives them a clean. However, if this doesn’t quite cut it, you can spray them with a hose a few times a year.

How much are Tesla solar batteries?
Tesla solar batteries are some of the most expensive solar battery storage systems on the market. The Powerwall and Powerwall 2.0 are both excellent options for homes that generate a lot of electricity from their solar panels, but they might not be worth it for those that only have small solar panel systems. But exactly how much are Tesla solar batteries? Since the Tesla Powerwall 2.0 is the latest solar battery, we’ll focus on this one. With installation, you can expect to pay anywhere between £6,500 and £9,000. Other lithium-ion batteries, like SolaX or the LG Chem, will cost around £4,000, so you can see the difference in price. The benefit of the Tesla solar batteries is that they have a huge capacity. Most battery storage systems have a useable capacity of somewhere between 4-8 kWh, whereas the Powerwall has a useable capacity of 13.5 kWh. This is excellent if you have a large solar panel system that generates a lot of electricity, since you’ll be able to store all of it to use yourself rather than sending any back to the grid. However, if your system can’t generate that much, it might not be worth spending the extra money on a Powerwall. Another thing to consider is how long Tesla solar batteries last. The Powerwall 2.0’s standard warranty is 10 years, and Tesla state that it should work at at least 70% capacity for those 10 years. That’s a pretty good warranty, and Tesla says that the battery should last way beyond that. So you could have the Powerwall for around 20 years, making it seem like a better investment. Just consider whether you need such a high-capacity battery before making your purchase.
How much do solar batteries cost?
How much solar batteries cost depends on the brand and type of battery and its capacity. At the moment, the cost is quite high because the technology is still new – but they will probably reduce, just like we saw the cost of solar panels reduce as the technology became more popular. It’s a great idea to get a solar battery installed with your solar panel system if you’re out most of the day. If you didn’t have a battery, all that electricity would simply go to the National Grid – but if you have a storage system, then while your solar panels are generating electricity in the day, it would get stored in the battery ready for you to use when you get home. Lithium-ion solar batteries are the most widely-used ones at the moment because they generally have a higher capacity and are more cost-effective. For a 3-4kWh battery, which would store enough electricity for a typical 4kW solar panel system, it will set you back an average of £3,400. If you need a larger battery, it could cost anywhere up to £6,000. Lead acid batteries are cheaper, and it can seem tempting to ask an installer to fit one for you – but they aren’t cheaper in the long run. While a 4kWh lead acid battery may only cost around £2,000, their life cycle is only around 1,800 cycles. A lithium-ion battery that costs around £4,000 would have a life cycle of about 4,000 cycles. That means that while the upfront cost is more, you won’t have to replace it as quickly as a lead acid one.
How long do solar panels last?

How long your solar panels will last depends on their age and quality. Most modern solar panels have 20-30 year warranties, but this doesn’t mean that they’ll stop working at this point. Many will stay at a good efficiency level for up to 40 years, while others will start to decline earlier.

Is solar energy renewable?

Solar energy is renewable, as the sunlight it uses won’t run out. This means that it’s a great way to generate electricity without damaging the planet. So, installing solar panels to generate solar energy can be a great move for businesses looking to reduce their carbon emissions.

How much energy does a solar panel produce?

How much energy a solar panel produces depends on its manufacturer and exposure to the sun. A good-quality solar panel typically has a power output of about 300 watts per hour, but this can vary from about 240 to 360 watts. How much energy your solar panel will produce per day depends on how many hours of unshaded daylight it’s exposed to.

Here’s an idea of how much energy you could expect a large commercial solar panel installation to produce in a year.

Solar panel system size, No. of solar panels, Annual electricity output

11kW, 44, 9,350kW

20kW, 80, 17,000kW

30kW, 120, 25,500kW

40kW, 160, 34,000kW

50kW, 200, 42,500kW

Who makes solar thermal panels?

There are a few trusted companies in the UK that make solar panels. While there are other solar thermal panels out there that are made by Chinese and American companies, we’ll focus on the brands with a longstanding presence in the UK since these are the panels MCS-registered solar companies are likely to recommend to you.

Viessmann, Worcester Bosch, Solar UK and Dimplex make some of the best solar thermal panels in the UK. Dimplex and Viessmann offer both flat plate and evacuated tube solar panels, while Solar UK only offers evacuated tubes. Worcester Bosch’s Greenskies range are all flat plate collectors. Viessmann’s panels come with a 5-year warranty, while Worcester Bosch and Dimplex offer extensive 10-year warranties. However, Solar UK offer a comprehensive 25-year warranty and guarantee that the panels will deliver the same level of performance for 25 years!

We’d recommend choosing evacuated tube solar thermal panels because they are the most efficient. While there won’t be much difference between evacuated tubes and flat plates in the summer, in the winter evacuated tubes are much better at taking heat from the sun than flat plates. Since our winters are long and cold with few daylight hours, we think it makes sense to go with evacuated tubes. However, if your priority is looks over maximising efficiency, you might want to choose flat plate collectors since they sit flat on the roof and look more like solar PV panels, whereas the evacuated tubes will stick out.
