The Scottish Joint Industry Board was founded in 1969 by SELECT and Unite the Union. The aims of the Board include to stimulate and further the progress of the industry and regulate and control employment, the level of skill and health and safety competence in order to benefit the public.
Using an electrical contracting firm that is a member of the SJIB means that they participate in a Holiday/Welfare Scheme, so they treat their employees fairly. They also must adhere to health and safety regulations, so you can be sure that the company will work safely in your home.
The SJIB also runs an Apprentice and Adult Training Scheme, which aims to maintain and improve the quality of training and ensure that it meets the needs of the industry. Electrical contractors that have been a part of this scheme will be highly competent and skilled to carry out the electrical work you need doing.
The Board distributes SJIB Grade (ECS) Cards, which show consumers that contractors are suitably qualified. One of the grades is the Approved Electrician, which means that the tradesperson has completed an apprenticeship in electrical installation. They must have had two years’ experience as a graded electrician immediately prior to applying for the grade. They must also be able to work on their own and carry out electrical installation work without detailed supervision.
Using an SJIB electrical contractor means that your work will be carried out safely and in a highly skilled manner.
