About HETAS
The Heating Equipment Testing and Approval Scheme (HETAS) is the official Government-recognised body to approve biomass and solid fuel heating appliances, fuels and services. It also deals with the registration of competent installers and servicing businesses. HETAS exists to promote the safe use of solid fuels, biomass and related technology, and to achieve this they commit to the following objectives:• To provide all certification activities
• To work with Government, appliance and chimney manufacturers’ installers, fuel producers and organisations in the biomass sector to advance training and awareness
• Encourage continual improvement of products and promote high standards for quality
• Ensure that HETAS is offering an understandable and secure route through safety standards
HETAS is the only Competent Person Scheme for the installation of solid fuel, wood and biomass technologies. This means that registered installers can self-certify that their work is compliant with the building regulations, and HETAS will contact the local authority on their behalf. Members of HETAS stop their customers from having to apply to the Local Authority Building Control themselves, which could cost up to £300.
HETAS aims to inform its members’ customers. It provides safety and advice guides, including a Carbon Monoxide Awareness guide and how to keep safe in smoke control areas. Every year, HETAS publishes an official guide to approved products and services. It contains listings of approved appliances, ancillary equipment and products for use with biomass, wood and solid mineral fuels. It also provides details of chimney sweeps and businesses with trained, safe operatives.
HETAS also makes its complaints policy accessible for all clients. It states that if a customer feels that the HETAS registrant has not completed the work to the standard HETAS expects, the registrant must go back to the property to put the defects right.
