Gas Safe Register is the official list of gas engineers registered to work safely and legally on boilers, cookers, fires and other gas appliances. All gas engineers in the UK, Isle of Man and Guernsey must be on the Gas Safe Register by law.Gas Safe Register replaced CORGI as the gas registration body between 2009 and 2010. It aims to improve and maintain gas safety to the highest standards. It makes sure that the 120,000 gas engineers on the Register have the qualifications to work with gas. The Register protects the public from unsafe gas work in the following ways:
• Having a national investigations team finding individuals working illegally
• Inspecting Gas Safe registered engineers
• Providing information to the public about gas safety
• Investigating reports of unsafe gas work
Many gas engineers have a range of qualifications that confirm that they can work in a lot of areas of gas work. Consumers should check that an engineer is qualified to do the work that they want them to do. Gas Safe Register offers a service that allows customers to check their engineer online to find out what they are allowed to do.
Every Gas Safe engineer has a Gas Safe Register ID card with their unique licence number, showing the type of gas work they can do. It is important to ask to see an engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card before letting them carry out any work in the home. A genuine Gas Safe Register ID card will have the following features on the front and the back of the card:
• Licence number
• Start and expiry date
• Security hologram
• The work the engineer is qualified to do
• Up-to-date qualifications
