The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) is the professional body for the plumbing and heating industry in the UK. Founded in 1906, the members include consultants, public health engineers and practitioners. The CIPHE has a membership of approximately 8,000 which includes manufacturers and distributors. They support its work as Industrial Associates. It is the only body that offers individual professional recognition for qualifications and experience. It influences Government, industry and the public, drawing from the expertise of its members.
Eligible members of the CIPHE can apply to be on the Register of Plumbers or the Register of Heating Professionals. The public can view the list of trusted installers when they are looking to have plumbing or heating work done.
Customers can be confident that the tradesperson carrying out work for them has skills and commitment. Corporate members are granted letters after their name which shows their commitment to professional development. They must adhere to the CIPHE’s Code of Professional Standards, which means that whilst at work each member must:
• Perform professionally, competently and responsibly
• Safeguard the environment and public health and safety
• Comply with all relevant laws, regulations, standards and codes
• Broaden, improve and maintain their skills, knowledge and personal qualities
• Uphold the dignity, standing and reputation of the Institute and the plumbing mechanical engineering services industry
The members of the CIPHE voluntarily commit to this Code of Professional Standards. Customers can be sure that any work they have done by a member of the CIPHE will meet the high standards that the Institute sets.
The CIPHE operates an Approved Training Centre (ATC) scheme where it recognises training centres around the country as approved centres to deliver CIPHE-standard teaching. Maintaining a standard across the country means customers can have the confidence that any CIPHE professional they choose will carry out work to the best of their ability.
