Bingley
Bingley is a market town within the metropolitan borough of the City of Bradford situated in West Yorkshire, England. The town is positioned on the River Aire and also the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, and is located in Airedale to the south of Ilkley Moor. The population has recently witnessed a decline, having a population of roughly 20,000 in 2001 and dropping to 18,000 as recorded in the 2011 Census. The definition of the town's name is often thought to be 'Bing's Clearing' and originates from the Saxon language. The town's initial settlement served the ford across the River Aire at the narrowest point of the Aire Valley, and Ireland Bridge was made in 1986 with the intention of replacing the ford. Much of the older history of the town remains present within the town, for instance the Bingley Grammar School, founded during the sixteenth century, which is thought to be one of the oldest schools in the country.
