Caldicot

Caldicot is a smaller sized town and community within Monmouthshire, southeast Wales. The term 'Caldicot' is generally thought to come from the Old English phrase 'calde cot' which means 'cold hut'. A cold hut is an exposed shelter used by either humans or animals. As measured by population estimates collected in 2014, the town has a permanent resident population of about 11,500. One of the oldest buildings in Caldicot, Llanthony Secunda Manor was built around 1120 as a grange for monks from Llanthony Secunda Priory in Gloucester. By the middle of the 1800s, Caldicot grew into a small farming village. However, the coming of the South Wales Railway brought London and Cardiff within reasonably easy reach, although Caldicot station was not finished until 1936. Due to the industry attracted by the introduction of the railway, Henry Hughes of Tintern opened a wireworks next to the railway in 1862, which was soon to grow to be the village's main employer and attracted many new workers. In 1880, it turned into a tinplate works for the canning business. A popular landmark within the town is Court House, which was the residence of baker Henry Jones, the inventor of self-raising flour, from 1864 till his death in 1891. He is buried in the churchyard. Caldicot is also most famously known as the location of Caldicot Castle and lake. The area has well-known footpaths along the Caldicot Levels and the coastal path may be walked. Neighbouring tourist attractions are Caerwent and Wentwood. To the north west, Dewstow House dates from about 1804. Substantial gardens and grottoes constructed after 1895 have been undergoing restoration since 2000 and are now open for the public. For all your house improvements, ensure that you employ reputable professionals in Caldicot to make sure you get a great quality service.

Generally, the cost of commercial solar panels is within the range of £16000 to £70000 for small to mid-sized companies. However, there are a number of factors that can influence the cost of commercial solar panels which includes the size of the roof, the amount of energy that’s generated as well as the number incorporated. There is a need to evaluate the cost of solar panels so as to determine whether or not they’re a feasible option for your business. In order to determine the amount of energy your company uses per month, simply take a closer look at your utility bill.  This should indicate just how much energy you use per month as well as how much the utility company charges per kW. In general, most small to medium sized companies will incorporate 30,000 to 50,000 kWh annually and you can expect the cost to differ based on your location and the size of your system. The rule of thumb with larger systems is to calculate using £1000 per kW, plus VAT as the yardstick.

do you need planning for solar panels commercial building/?

Just like other major house improvement projects, some specific requirements must be met to allow for the installation of solar panels on commercial buildings. The main reason why these standards and regulations were established is to minimize the risk of the solar system becoming an issue or potential hazard in the unforeseeable future. So if you’re thinking about buying and fitting new solar panels, you’ll probably want to know whether or not you’ll require to submit a planning permission application for approval before you can proceed.

Fortunately, the installation of solar panels on commercial buildings may be “permitted development which mean you won’t have to apply to the Local Planning Authority for planning permission. There are, however, some important limits and conditions which must be put into consideration in order to benefit from these permitted development rights. Some of the limitations include:

  • The solar panels must be installed on a wall or pitched roof that should project at a maximum of 200mm from the surface of the wall or roof slope.
  • Equipment placed on a roof should not be within one metre of the external edge of that roof.
  • Equipment mounted on a wall must not be within one metre of a junction of that wall with another wall or with the roof of the building
  • If the equipment is on the roof of a building, the capacity for generation of electricity across the entire site must not be more than 1 megawatt.
  • In the situation whereby the panels are installed on a flat roof, the highest part of the equipment should not exceed one metre above the highest part of the roof.

In general, obtaining a planning permission is very important and as such, you must discuss your position with your chosen installation company before you proceed.

Are there are grants for commercial solar panels?

One of the things that has been on the UK government’s agenda for some time now is to promote the use of renewable energy sources. In fact, the Renewable Energy Directive put out by the EU instructs all member countries to achieve a 20 percent renewable target before the year 2020. The UK’s commitment to this objective has been made quite glaring with a number of funding options that has been put in place to help business owners looking to solar panels on their properties. This commitment was also showcased by a reduction in the cost of solar panels, so new investors have little to worry about. Although there aren’t any grants in the conventional sense, but there are opportunities for solar panel funding in the UK. At present, the only scheme open to new applications is the SEG - Smart Export Guarantee which came into effect on 1st January, 2020.

In general, there are four notable incentives in the UK for solar panels which includes the aforementioned Smart Export Guarantee, Reduced VAT on Energy Saving Products, Feed-in Tariff ( no longer open to new applications ), as well as the Renewable Heat Incentive ( RHI - applies only to solar water heating ).

Being the only one still open to new applications, we’ll provide you with some insights on SEG. The Smart Export Guarantee allows small scale low-carbon electricity generators to receive payments for surplus energy they’re able to export back to the grid. Although, this is not a direct government scheme, all licensed suppliers are necessitated to offer an export tariff to their customers. Those suppliers with more than 150,000 customers are obligated to offer a tariff, while the suppliers with fewer customers can partake on a voluntary basis.
