Bellingham

Bellingham is a district in south east London, in the London Borough of Lewisham. Its neighbouring districts are Catford, Sydenham and Downham. The Ravensbourne River runs through the centre of Bellingham, and to the east and west it is bordered by railway lines running south from Catford.

The name Bellingham means ‘the water-meadow belonging to Beora’s people’, and was the name of the medieval manor in the region. The true name was preserved by the farm in the region, Bellingham Railway Station and the Bellingham Estate. Additional historical names have been preserved by the street titles of the estate, which are linked with King Alfred, who was simply thought to have been god, the father of the manor of Lewisham, and were extracted from the names of mills, houses and fields in the area.

Bellingham was mainly farmland before Bellingham Estate was built, mostly between 1920 and 1923. London City Council built about 2600 houses and flats during this time. Bellingham Estate was one of many huge estates constructed by London City Council following the First World War to aid with slum clearance and alleviate overcrowding. As there is plenty of land available the majority of the dwellings built were two-story homes, and there was lots of green, open space.

Today, Bellingham is a localised town centre. Its traditional is Randlesdown Road, which has a supermarket, a gym, hairdressers and multiple restaurants and food outlets. It also has a sixth form college, and a church and a library. Bellingham boasts many famous past and present residents, including the singer/song-writer Kate Bush, the former Labour Prime Minister James Callaghan, and the footballer Ian Wright.

Generally, the cost of commercial solar panels is within the range of £16000 to £70000 for small to mid-sized companies. However, there are a number of factors that can influence the cost of commercial solar panels which includes the size of the roof, the amount of energy that’s generated as well as the number incorporated. There is a need to evaluate the cost of solar panels so as to determine whether or not they’re a feasible option for your business. In order to determine the amount of energy your company uses per month, simply take a closer look at your utility bill.  This should indicate just how much energy you use per month as well as how much the utility company charges per kW. In general, most small to medium sized companies will incorporate 30,000 to 50,000 kWh annually and you can expect the cost to differ based on your location and the size of your system. The rule of thumb with larger systems is to calculate using £1000 per kW, plus VAT as the yardstick.

how long does it take to install commercial solar panels?

After making the very important business decision to go solar, you may also want to know just how long it’ll take to complete the installation process and start generating electricity. After all, generating electricity is the main reason you made the switch to solar system. In this post, we’re going to provide you with in depth details on how long it takes to install solar panels as well as the factors that may affect that time.

The entire process of solar panels installation and getting them approved isn’t an overnight process. You’ll have to wait for periods for each step of the process whereby one must be completed before moving to the next. The time required to complete each step can, however, vary largely depending on your location, the type of solar panels you opt for, the solar company you hire as well as the number of people that’ll be making the installation. Here are the steps to a solar system installation and the estimated time each are expected to take:

  • Site assessment. Once you chosen your solar company, the first step would be to have a solar professional from the company to visit the site to examine the roof and other features so as to make sure that they’re able to support a solar system. From the initial contact to scheduling the site visit, this step can take up to 1 to 2 weeks
  • Local permitting. This involves getting the right permits from your local authorities. This can take up to 3 to 6 or more weeks.
  • Solar system design. This may take up to a week or two depending on whether or not you need design approval and also where the parts are coming from
  • Installation. This step can take a week or two depending on the size af your solar panel and roof.
  • Inspection. This step can take up to a week depending on where you reside and how quickly the inspector can visit.
  • Utility connection. Depending on your utility company, this step can take up to 2 weeks.
Can you install commercial solar panels on a flat roof?

With the numerous benefits that comes with the installation of solar panels, it should not be an option for just a few just because of the size and/or pitch of their roof. A number of individuals with flat roofs decide against solar panels due to the fact that they believe that the panels can’t be installed due to the lack of direct sunlight. However, in truth, this thought is absolutely incorrect. This is because it is actually very possible to fit solar panels on flat roofs and you can also benefit from a good amount of electricity that’ll be generated over time. In this post, we’re going to look at the possibilities involved in the installation of commercial solar panels on a flat roof. Let’s get started!

In reality, flat roof solar systems are mostly found on commercial buildings as their roof is typically made to be flat. Although, it’s important to note that it’s absolutely possible for them to be fitted on domestic properties too. The type of solar array that’s installed makes use of the same type of solar panel as a conventional system, however, there are some considerations that’ll have to be made moving forward. The array must be able to self clean during the rainy season while also avoiding damage whenever there’s a strong wind. The installation company you choose should take the pitch of the system into account, so as to make sure that its able to capture as much energy from the sun as possible. And that’s exactly why you should consider the use of thin film solar cells which are very flexible and moves with the sun as the day goes by, securing as much sunlight as possible as its always in direct light.

do you need planning for solar panels commercial building/?

Just like other major house improvement projects, some specific requirements must be met to allow for the installation of solar panels on commercial buildings. The main reason why these standards and regulations were established is to minimize the risk of the solar system becoming an issue or potential hazard in the unforeseeable future. So if you’re thinking about buying and fitting new solar panels, you’ll probably want to know whether or not you’ll require to submit a planning permission application for approval before you can proceed.

Fortunately, the installation of solar panels on commercial buildings may be “permitted development which mean you won’t have to apply to the Local Planning Authority for planning permission. There are, however, some important limits and conditions which must be put into consideration in order to benefit from these permitted development rights. Some of the limitations include:

  • The solar panels must be installed on a wall or pitched roof that should project at a maximum of 200mm from the surface of the wall or roof slope.
  • Equipment placed on a roof should not be within one metre of the external edge of that roof.
  • Equipment mounted on a wall must not be within one metre of a junction of that wall with another wall or with the roof of the building
  • If the equipment is on the roof of a building, the capacity for generation of electricity across the entire site must not be more than 1 megawatt.
  • In the situation whereby the panels are installed on a flat roof, the highest part of the equipment should not exceed one metre above the highest part of the roof.

In general, obtaining a planning permission is very important and as such, you must discuss your position with your chosen installation company before you proceed.
