The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames towards the City of London. It was formed in 1965 when three smaller sized council locations amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This included the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, as well as the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. All districts of the area are inside the London postal district.
The borough covers an overall area of about 11.14 square miles. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. As outlined by population estimates produced part way through 2014, Southwark has a permanent population of about 302538 individuals.
The borough is home to many cultural, historical and notable attractions. The Shard, Tate Modern, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, and Borough Market which are the biggest of the venues in Southwark to draw domestic and international tourism. Dulwich is home to the Dulwich Picture Gallery plus the Imperial War Museum in Elephant and Castle.
