After a number of fires in the 18th and 19th centuries, most of the town's real estate dates from the late Victorian period onwards, with the tower of the parish church the only middle ages structure continuing to be. Following the draining pipes of the Fens, beginning in the 17th century and finished in the 19th century, the community's economy has been based upon agriculture and also related industry. Due to its distance to Cambridge, Huntingdon and also Peterborough, the community has actually emerged as a traveler community. The town had a population of 10,453 at the time of the UK Census 2011.
