Alfreton

Alfreton is a town and civil parish in Amber Valley within the county of Derbyshire, linking the Bolsover and North East Derbyshire districts. It was a Norman Manor prior to becoming an Urban District, and has a smaller population of about 7971, as per the 2011 census. Traditionally, the villages of Ironville, Riddings, Somercotes and Swanwick together form a section of the Manor along with the Urban District, with a population of 24476 in the 2001 census. The existence of easily obtainable and rich deposits of coal and ironstone within the area led to the development in significance of mining and iron-working in the end of the medieval period, changing the classic agricultural economy. Huge numbers of smaller workings and pits have been constructed, and Alfreton became the chief coal-mining centre in Derbyshire by the 18th century. The development of these industries contributed drastically to the town's prosperity and attracted significant numbers of workers, making Alfreton the third biggest town inside the nation by the end of the 18th century. Population development led to the development of brick-making and tile-making industries inside the town, in addition to boot-making, repairing and leather as a result of the need for industrial footwear. Because of the decline of the market in the middle of the 20th century, the pits closed in the 1960s and their sites are now employed for other types of development. Alfreton is a vibrant urban centre with a mix of chain stores as well as a number of independent companies, including pubs, food outlets as well as a leisure centre. For all of your property upgrades, ensure to make use of trusted specialists in Alfreton to make certain of quality.

FAQs

How much do solar batteries cost?
How much solar batteries cost depends on the brand and type of battery and its capacity. At the moment, the cost is quite high because the technology is still new – but they will probably reduce, just like we saw the cost of solar panels reduce as the technology became more popular. It’s a great idea to get a solar battery installed with your solar panel system if you’re out most of the day. If you didn’t have a battery, all that electricity would simply go to the National Grid – but if you have a storage system, then while your solar panels are generating electricity in the day, it would get stored in the battery ready for you to use when you get home. Lithium-ion solar batteries are the most widely-used ones at the moment because they generally have a higher capacity and are more cost-effective. For a 3-4kWh battery, which would store enough electricity for a typical 4kW solar panel system, it will set you back an average of £3,400. If you need a larger battery, it could cost anywhere up to £6,000. Lead acid batteries are cheaper, and it can seem tempting to ask an installer to fit one for you – but they aren’t cheaper in the long run. While a 4kWh lead acid battery may only cost around £2,000, their life cycle is only around 1,800 cycles. A lithium-ion battery that costs around £4,000 would have a life cycle of about 4,000 cycles. That means that while the upfront cost is more, you won’t have to replace it as quickly as a lead acid one.
Are solar panel batteries worth it?

Whether solar panel batteries are worth it depends on how much you’re at home and how big your solar panel system is. If you’re at home most of the day and your solar panels only generate enough electricity for you to use while for that day, then a battery probably isn’t worth investing in. However, if you have a large system that generates more than you can use or you’re out most of the day, then solar panel batteries are definitely worth it.

A solar battery storage system works by storing the electricity that your solar panels generated until you need to use it. That’s why they’re great for people that are out all day – your solar panels generate electricity all day whilst the sun’s out, but no one’s home so you’re using minimal energy except for things like your fridge and any appliances on standby. Most of the electricity charges your solar panel battery. Then, when you get home, your battery will discharge, and you’ll use all the solar electricity that your panels generated during the day.

Solar batteries are also excellent for people with large solar panel systems that generate more than they use in the day. Any electricity that you don’t use during the day will charge the battery, so in the evening when the sun goes down, you’ll just use the excess electricity that’s stored in the battery.

To work out whether solar panel batteries are worth it for you, you’ll need to work out how much of your solar electricity you’re using already. If you’re at home and you’re able to run your appliances all while your solar panels are generating electricity, a battery might not be worth it. Also, if you’re receiving export payments from the Feed-in Tariff Scheme (FITs) or the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), you might want to look at the rate you’re getting paid. If it’s a good rate, it might be more cost-effective to continue exporting unused electricity to the grid. Speak to an MCS-registered installer that will be able to help you work this out.

How long does a Tesla Powerwall battery last?

Tesla’s top-of-the-range battery storage system is still one of the most expensive on the market. It has a huge 13.5kWh usable capacity and can even keep you up and running during a power cut. But how long does a Tesla Powerwall battery last? And does this mean it’s worth investing in one?

The Tesla Powerwall 2.0 comes with a 10-year warranty. But Tesla says that it should last way beyond this – at least 5 years longer. The standard warranty says that it should work at 70% capacity for the full 10 years – so if it loses more than 30% of its storage capacity within that time, it should still be covered.

While the Tesla Powerwall does last a long time, it has a large capacity that most average households won’t require, and it’s a costly option. After installation, the Powerwall 2.0 will set you back between £6,500 and £9,000, so ideally you want it to last past its 10-year warranty.

Before you splash out, consider the size of the solar panel system you want to install or you already have. Will it generate enough electricity to make it worth storing in the Powerwall? If not, are you expecting to upgrade your solar panels to a larger system in the future? If you are, then it might be worth investing in a Powerwall. It might also be better to wait until you come to upgrade your solar panels – the solar battery price trend is going the same way as solar panels, so they will probably continue to decrease in price as more people adopt the technology.

How long do home solar batteries last?
How long home solar batteries last depends on the type of battery you have and how often it’s charged and discharged (when electricity is fed into it, then used later on). Generally speaking, a home solar battery should last between 5 and 15 years. Lithium-ion batteries last longer than lead acid batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are more common these days because they’re more cost effective. A lead acid battery is the cheaper option at around £2,000, but it’s likely to last between 5-8 years. On the other hand, a lithium-ion battery may set you back around £4,000, but will last between 11-15 years. So you can see that it’s well worth choosing a lithium-ion home solar battery. It’s also worth considering that a solar battery’s lifespan will be reduced if you over-discharge it. When your home solar battery is installed, you’ll be left a manual which will tell you its depth of discharge, or DoD. This means how much you can use the battery before recharging it – it's not as simple as letting the battery run down to 0% then charging it again. In fact, this can significantly shorten your battery’s lifespan. If your solar battery system’s DoD is 80% and its capacity is 5kW, make sure you charge it before you use up 4kW to help prolong its life. Luckily, most lithium-ion batteries have a DoD of 80% or more, so you don’t need to worry about not being able to use much of the electricity stored in your home solar battery. This is another reason to use them over lead acid batteries, because their DoD can be as low as 50%.
