Soffits & Fascias in Hook

Fascias and soffits are an essential part of many guttering systems. Not only do they provide support for the guttering itself, they enhance the appearance of your house by creating a clean and neat finish to the roofline. Fascias or fascia boards are horizontal boards that sit on the edge of the rafters of your roof, closing the end of the roof and offering the support that the guttering is fastened to. Soffits run under the fascia boards, closing the gap and protecting the underside of the rafter ends. Soffits are often ventilated to enable the roof timbers to breathe and also to stop any moisture buildup. Box ends are utilised where the horizontal fascia meets the diagonal barge board that runs up the edge of the roof profile, presenting a neat finish to an otherwise ugly join.

Fascias and soffits are typically produced from either wood or UPVC. Wood fascias and soffits are widespread on older properties and continue to be popular. However, timber fascias and soffits can rot with time and expose the rest of the guttering to problems or leaks. Recently, UPVC fascias and soffits have been increasingly popular as they offer a long lasting alternative that will not rot. UPVC fascias and soffits can be purchased in a number of colours to match any house, although white is very fashionable as it offers a traditional appearance. Fascias are additionally available in ogee moulded designs, where feature grooves are incorporated. These can have a striking effect.

Hook

Hook is a town and civil parish within the Hart district of northern Hampshire, England. It is set 6.2 miles east of Basingstoke and 36 miles northeast of Southampton and 41 miles northeast of London. Prior to the 18th century, the town was composed of a scattering of farms. Set on the main London to Exeter stagecoach route, a turnpike road was built at the end of the 18th century to support the navigation of the Scures Hill. According to the 2011 Census, Hook has a population of 8334 locals. Despite the fact that the population of the town remains small, it has actually seen extensive expansion since development in the 1980s. Hook continued to expand with the construction of the Holt Park residential district between 2004 and 2006. There is a high level of affluence in Hook, with rural estates such as Tylney Hall Park and Garden, which is Grade II * listed, and Hook Common, which is a large mix of forest and acid heathland. The town has handy and efficient rail links to London Waterloo and Basingstoke, with indirect routes to Reading, Salisbury and Southampton from Hook Train Station. The development of the railway station in 1883 allowed the expansion of the town after railway employees and commuters started to settle in the area. The town is noted for its substantial business community, such as the substantial Bartley Wood Business Park being under a distance of 1 kilometre from the town centre. For all of your home upgrades, make sure to make use of respected specialists in Hook to make certain of quality.

    FAQs

What colour should soffits and fascias be?

Soffits and fascias are available in lots of different colours. These include black, grey, brown, white and cream. It’s also possible to get them in brighter colours like reds, blues and greens.

What colour soffits and fascias you get is entirely up to you, unless you live in a listed building, in which case some rules may apply. Most people choose a colour that matches their roof, walls or window frames to give their property an attractive, colour-coordinated look.

how to fit fascias and soffits?

Fascias and Soffits, just like any other components of a home, do not last forever. They can become tired and worn out over time which implies that you’ll have to replace them to prevent further damage. Getting this project completed can be quite costly, but it doesn’t have to be. Fitting soffits and fascias is very simple task which will leave you with both a modern and contemporary styling which requires little maintenance and also more savings. What’s more? You don’t have to worry about repainting the fascias and soffits on an annual basis, all you need to do is a gentle wipe down of the features with a damp cloth to have them look good.

If you’re a competent DIYer and confident enough to pull off this task, then all the better. However, if otherwise, we’d strongly recommend you hire the services of a reliable contractor who can guarantee the best results for help. Here are the steps you can follow to fit your fascias and soffits.

    Fascias ( a 18mm fascia board)

✓ This is designed for a direct fix without a need for a timber substrate. Simply secure them directly to the rafters with the help of 2 x 65mm a4 stainless steel fixing nails per rafter.

✓ Ensure that the rafters are level.

✓ Cut the boards back 5mm per edge to enable expansion where any white corner trims, joint trims or angle trims is needed.

✓ Secure the guttering to all third rafter.

    Soffit ( 9mm soffit board)

✓ Ensure that the preservative treatment to the structural timber has dried out.

✓ Fix all utility boards of about 100mm to 605mm in width at a maximum of 60mm centres.

✓ If ventilation is needed, there are some soffits that are available in 150mm to 605mm widths and also provides the 10mm air gap needed for roof with a pitch above 15 degrees

Can you paint soffits and fascias?

You can paint your soffits and fascias if they’re made of wood. In fact, it’s a good idea to do this every few years, as it can help to preserve them and keep them looking smart.

You can choose what you paint your soffits and fascias with by deciding what kind of look you want to achieve. You can stain them if you want to maintain a natural wood look, or use an exterior gloss or satin paint if you want to change their colour.

Which material is best for soffits and fascias?

In general uPVC is used for soffits and fascias as it is very strong and durable. It also requires very little maintenance. However, wood can be used and is still popular on listed properties as it retains the original material. Older and listed buildings may require more traditional materials to be used.
