Faringdon is a historical market town in the Vale of White Horse, Oxfordshire, England. Within the historic limits of Berkshire, it is 18 miles (29 km) south-west of Oxford, 10 miles (16 km) north-west of Wantage and also 12 miles (19 km) east-north-east of Swindon. It is a large parish, its lowest parts reaching the River Thames in the north as well as its greatest ground getting to the Ridgeway in the south. Faringdon was the western community in Berkshire until the 1974 boundary adjustments transferred it to Oxfordshire. The civil parish is formally Great Faringdon to identify it from Little Faringdon in West Oxfordshire. The 2011 Census gave a population of 7,121. On 1 February 2004, Faringdon was offered Fairtrade Town status, as the first Fairtrade Town in South East England. It is the base for Faringdon Enterprise Gateway, which helps as well as recommends businesses in country west Oxfordshire.
