Cowes

Cowes is an English seaport town and civil parish on the Isle of Wight. Cowes is located on the west bank of the estuary of the River Medina, facing the smaller town of East Cowes on the east bank. The 2 towns are linked by the Cowes Floating Bridge, a chain ferryboat. It is among a couple of remaining chain ferries not replaced by a physical bridge. Leland's 19th century verses illustrated the towns poetically as 'The two great Cowes that in loud thunder roar, This on the eastern, that the western shore'. Cowes has been viewed as a home for global sailboat racing since the founding of the Royal Yacht Squadron in 1815. The town gives its name to the world's oldest routine regatta, Cowes Week, which takes place on an annual basis in the very first week of August. Later in the summertime, powerboat races are held. The population was 9663 in the 2001 census, a figure that doubles during the course of the regatta in early August. More recently, the population at the 2011 Census was 10405. Much of the town's architecture is still greatly influenced by the design of ornate building which Prince Albert popularised. Business in both Cowes and East Cowes has always centred on the building and design of marine craft and materials connected with boat-making, consisting of the early flying boats, and sail-making. Cowes is an entry town for the Isle of Wight. Tourists to Southampton are served by a high speed catamaran passenger ferry from Cowes called the Red Jet. It is the area where the very first hovercraft was tried out. For all your home improvements, make sure to find reliable contractors in Cowes to make sure of quality.

Can I put a skip on the road?

Apart from the cost of hiring a skip, the area in which to place the large item is another major concern for individuals looking to hire a skip. So if you’re wondering whether you can place your hired skip on the road, there are four legal requirements that applies and must be complied with for your protection in the situation whereby a third party accident takes place. Deciding to overlook these conditions can lead to a fine or forceful removal of the skip by the local council.

Here are the compulsory legal requirements that must be fully complied with:

• Get A Permit

The local council gives out a permit for skips to be placed on the road. This permit must be acquired and the cost may vary depending on the local council in your area.

• Illuminate The Skip

Since the skip is to be placed on the road, then it’ll only make sense to have it illuminated at night or in low lighting situations for safety of all road users. According to the law, lights must be positioned at each end of the skip to be easily spotted.

• Use Cones

According to the law, a minimum of two (2) cones must be placed on the skip’s approach side for the protection of all road users.

• Comply With The Skip Requirements

You can’t place just any skip you like on the road. By the law, there are certain conditions that must be met by the skip itself before placement. It must be painted with the yellow colour on the sides, have both the owner’s name and phone number clearly written on it and must also possess a BS AU152:1970 complying red and yellow fluorescent reflective marking which is compulsory to be acquired within two (2) working days upon filling.
