It lies 9.4 miles from Charing Cross, with nearby localities being Kingston upon Thames, Raynes Park, Surbiton, Tolworth, Wimbledon and Worcester Park. The town established entirely due to the fact that of the coming of the train when New Malden Railway Station opened in 1846 on the main line from Waterloo. The name stems from the prior village of old Malden, which was 2 miles to the south of the town, which translates from Old English as 'the cross on the hill'.
