Aberfoyle

Aberfoyle is a village in Stirling, Scotland. It is around 27 miles from Glasgow. It lies along the River Forth at the base of Craigmore which is 420 metres high. In 2010, it was estimated that the population was 800.

During the 1820s to the 1950s, the slate quarries on Craigmore were a principal industry for Aberfoyle. Other industries, established in the 1720s, included wool spinning and a lint mill.

From 1882, Aberfoyle had its own railway station, but this closed to passengers in 1951 and to freight traffic in 1959. Nowadays the village is supported by the forestry industry and tourism.

Aberfoyle calls itself 'The Gateway to the Trossachs'. Its position attracts visitors as they can visit Loch Lomond and the Lake of Menteith, Scotland's only lake. The closeby Queen Elizabeth Forest Park arranges walks round the local lochs. Aberfoyle also has the biggest Go Ape adventure course in the UK, featuring the longest zipline in the country. Tourists can also see the 'Quack Commandoes', where a sheepdog herds Indian Runner ducks!

FAQs

How much could I save on my energy bills if I install double glazing?

As well as keeping your home warmer and reducing noise, you’ll notice a saving on your energy bills from installing double glazing. If you install A++ rated windows in your home after having single glazing, you could save up to £120 year on your energy bills. The Energy Saving Trust has more information.

Should I use a Fensa registered installer?

Using a Fensa registered installer isn’t compulsory but it helps to protect you from cowboys and rogue traders. It will also make life a whole lot easier in regards to Building Regulations. Replacement windows must meet a certain energy efficiency rating and once fitted you need a certificate to show your installation complies. By using a Fensa registered company they’ll issue this certificate, otherwise you’ll need the council to look at the new windows.

What happens to my old windows?

After fitting your new windows, your installer should take away and dispose of your old windows. If you want to keep them, just let your installer know before they start work. The UPVC frames are melted down and used on the unseen parts of new windows. Aluminium frames are re-smelted and wooden are broken down and used as chipboard.

Do I need to stay at home while my windows are being replaced?

Most installers will not need you to be at home while they are fitting your windows. It is a good idea to be present though, just in case they have any questions for you and perhaps for your own peace of mind. If you cannot be there, you will need to arrange access to the property and/or agree securing the property at the end of the day.
