Abbots Langley
Abbots Langley is a substantial village and civil parish in the English county of Hertfordshire. It is an old settlement and is named Langelai in the Domesday Book of 1086. This village has had a lengthy background of productive human residence. The first traces of human inhabitation in the location were discovered by well-known archaeologist Sir John Evans. The village is located on a saucer of clay covered by a coating of gravel, and consequently water supply has never been a problem; records demonstrate that in earlier times water could be drawn from a well only 20 feet deep. Economically, the village is tightly linked to Watford and was formerly part of the Watford Rural District. Since 1974 it has been included in the Three Rivers district. According to the 2001 Census, the town has a permanent population of around 10472. Abbots Langley F.C., the local side who at present compete in the West Herts Saturday League, use the facilities at the neighbouring Leavesden Country Park.
