Melton Constable is a village and civil parish in the English county of Norfolk. It covers an area of 6.96 km2 (2.69 sq mi) and had a population of 518 in 225 families at the 2001 census. The population had actually enhanced to 618 at the 2011 Census. For the purposes of local government, it drops within the district of North Norfolk. The village sits on relatively high ground south-west of Holt. The place-name 'Melton Constable' is first testified in the Domesday Book of 1086, where it appears as 'Maeltuna'. This may indicate either 'middle community' or 'mill community'. There is a referral to 'Constabularius de Melton' in 1197, as the land was held by the constable of the diocesan of Norwich. Melton Constable Hall is considered the finest specimen of the Christopher Wren style of home. The church of St Peter's Melton Constable lies within Melton Constable park; it contains numerous monuments to the Astley family, that formerly stayed at Melton Constable Hall.
