Pevensey is a town as well as civil parish in the Wealden area of East Sussex, England. The primary village lies five miles (8 km) north-east of Eastbourne, one mile (1.6 km) inland from Pevensey Bay. The settlement of Pevensey Bay develops part of the parish. It was right here that William the Conqueror made the touchdown in his intrusion of England in 1066 after crossing the English Channel from Normandy, France. In 1207 the community was given a royal charter by King John and was regulated by Pevensey Corporation. With the decrease in the town's relevance by the 19th century, the Corporation was at some point dissolved in 1886 and the town shed its borough status. The documents of the Corporation are held in the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes, and also a volunteer body, the Pevensey Town Trust, was developed to manage the home which had actually previously come from the Corporation, most significantly the Old Court House. Pevensey is now a town, with a church council consisting of twelve chosen councillors.
