Montacute

Montacute is a tiny town and also civil parish in Somerset, England, 4 miles (6.4 km) west of Yeovil. The town has a population of 831 (2011 census). The name Montacute is thought by some to stem from the Latin "Mons Acutus", describing the conically severe St Michael's Hill dominating the town to the west. Mortain held Montacute after 1066, Drogo was a close partner. The town is constructed nearly totally of the neighborhood hamstone. From the 15th century till the start of the 20th century it created the heart of the estate of the Phelips family of Montacute House. The town has a great medieval church, and was the site of a Cluniac abbey, the gatehouse of which is currently a private home. At the centre of the village is a huge square called the 'District' around which are organized picturesque cottages and a club, the Phelips Arms; there is a second hostelry and also hotel located in the town, called the King's Arms.

FAQs

What is the best guttering material?

The best type of guttering material will vary depending on the requirements of the property. For example, on listed buildings cast iron or aluminium guttering may be required to maintain the character of the property. Generally, UPVC is the accepted standard for almost all modern properties.

Do I need an architect to build a house?

Like building an extension, you’re not legally required to hire an architect to build a house. However, given the amount of money you’ll be investing in your project, it’s vital to get it right. Clear, accurate plans are essential for any builder or other tradesperson to get the right materials in the right place. Building projects that go wrong because of inaccurate plans can at best look odd, and at worst be structurally unsound.

We’d recommend hiring either an architect or a skilled design and build company to create the plans for your new house. If you hire an architect to do your designs, you can choose whether to involve them further in your project, or use another professional or your own skills to take care of any applications and project management.

What does an architect do?

Architects specialise in designing new properties, extensions and interior layouts. Land and property owners typically hire an architect to help them create structures that compliment their environment, make best practical use of space, are structurally sound and meet budget requirements.

Architects typically offer design and project management services. This means that they’re involved in a project from start to finish, creating a concept, submitting planning and other applications, and managing construction. However, you can also hire an architect just to create your design and plans.

How should I choose a residential architect?

The key aspect to choosing the right residential architect for your project is communication. Make sure you choose an architect who you can communicate well with – it’s vital that you are able to accurately communicate your requirements for your building.
