Great Dunmow is a historic market town and civil parish in the Uttlesford district of Essex, England. It is positioned on the north of the A120 road, roughly midway between Bishop's Stortford as well as Braintree, 6 miles east of London Stansted Airport. Originally the site of a Roman negotiation on Stane Street, the town flourished during the Middle Ages. Several buildings survive from this period, consisting of a sixteenth-century town hall. Dunmow indicates "Meadow on capital". [4] The settlement was otherwise described as Dunmow Magna, Much Dunmow, or many commonly Great Dunmow. Great Dunmow borders the former estate of Easton Lodge in the neighbouring parish of Little Easton, a country house belonging to the Maynard family. The most remarkable member, Frances Maynard, ended up being the Countess of Warwick as well as later on a girlfriend of King Edward VII. As the Prince of Wales he was supposedly a normal visitor to the Estate, taking a trip from London on the train to Easton Lodge train station. The initials "CW" are visible on a variety of Victorian era buildings in Great Dunmow. Called Daisy Greville, Countess of Warwick she was a generous benefactor in the neighborhood neighborhood. As of 2018, Robert Nicholson is Emeritus Mayor of Great Dunmow.
