The London Borough of Southwark in south London, England forms a part of Inner London and is connected by bridges across the River Thames to the City of London. It was created in 1965 when 3 smaller sized council places amalgamated under the London Government Act 1963. This incorporated the former area of the Metropolitan Borough of Southwark, the Metropolitan Borough of Camberwell, and also the Metropolitan Borough of Bermondsey. It's governed by Southwark London Borough Council.
It borders the City of London and the London Borough of Tower Hamlets towards the north, with the River Thames forming the boundary, the London Borough of Lambeth to the west and the London Borough of Lewisham to the east. Towards the south are the London Boroughs of Bromley and Croydon. Southwark has a wide selection of housing, which includes council housing, such as the post-Blitz Aylesbury Estate and also the Heygate Estate to supply houses to low-income residents.
