Catterick Garrison is a major garrison and town located 3 miles south of Richmond in the Richmondshire district of North Yorkshire, England. The town lies inside the Central Richmondshire electoral division of North Yorkshire County Council and divided among the Hipswell and Scotton wards of Richmondshire District Council. The town is divided among two civil parishes. The southern part of the town, south of a little stream referred to as Leadmill Gill, is inside the civil parish of Scotton. The northern part forms the greater part of the civil parish of Hipswell. Each parish has its personal parish council. It is the largest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of about 13000 and measuring over 2400 acres. The original intention for Catterick was to be a short-term camp to accommodate two complete divisions with about 40000 men in 2000 huts. However, under plans announced by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in November 2005, the population of Catterick Garrison is expected to develop to more than 25000 by 2020, making it the biggest population centre inside the local area. Lacking a true town centre, the Garrison gained its 1st significant supermarket in 2000, in addition to a retail park referred to as 'Richmondshire Walk', which also includes a McDonalds, a Poundstretcher along with a Peacocks, among others. 'Catterick Leisure Centre' is a purpose built complex opposite the retail park, opened in July 2009, and it presents a broad spectrum of leisure and fitness facilities which include a swimming pool, along with a gym, and also an adjoining public library.
