Pevensey is a town and also civil parish in the Wealden area of East Sussex, England. The main town is located 5 miles (8 kilometres) north-east of Eastbourne, one mile (1.6 kilometres) inland from Pevensey Bay. The settlement of Pevensey Bay creates part of the parish. It was below that William the Conqueror made the touchdown in his intrusion of England in 1066 after crossing the English Channel from Normandy, France. In 1207 the town was provided a royal charter by King John and was governed by Pevensey Corporation. With the decrease in the town's value by the 19th century, the Corporation was eventually dissolved in 1886 as well as the town shed its borough status. The records of the Corporation are held in the East Sussex Record Office at Lewes, and also a voluntary body, the Pevensey Town Trust, was created to handle the building which had previously come from the Corporation, most significantly the Old Court House.
