Oakham
Oakham is a historic English market town in Rutland in the East Midlands of England. It is located to the west of Rutland Water, which is one of the largest man-made lakes in Europe. It is home to All Saints' Church, erected in the 14th Century, and Oakham Castle, which has its roots in the 12th Century. Only the great hall of the castle is still there, and it is a famous tourist attraction in the town.
Every Wednesday and Saturday in Oakham there is a market where a selection of local goods are on sale. Every third Saturday there is a farmer's market on Gaol Street, where local farmers sell their goods.
An interesting landmark in Oakham is the Oakham Signal Box, which Airfix used as a mould for all their model rail sets. Another custom that the town has is hanging horseshoes in the great hall of the castle. Every time a member of royalty or peer of the realm travelled to Oakham, they had to pay a fee in the form of a horseshoe. The horseshoes hang upside-down which is widely seen to be unlucky, but in Oakham this was to stop the Devil from sitting in the hollow.
