Carrickfergus
Carrickfergus, identified locally and colloquially as "Carrick", is regarded as a substantial town within County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It is located on the northern coast of Belfast Lough, 11 miles (18 km) from Belfast. The town had a population of 27,201 on the 2001 Census and got its name from Fergus Mór maEirc, the 6th century king of Dál Riata. It is County Antrim's oldest town and one of the oldest settlements in Northern Ireland altogether. Carrickfergus is the administrative centre for Carrickfergus Borough Council and forms an area of the Belfast Metropolitan Area.
