The kinds of roofing insulation offered depend on the kind of roof that it will be used with. With an angled roof, either warm or chilly loft space insulation can be suitable. Cold loft space insulation is the cheapest choice, simply including positioning insulation over wooden joists. Nevertheless, as this only avoids warm leaving the living location of the home, it isn't ideal for those wanting to concealed the loft space right into a space. Warm loft insulation is placed directly under the roof, and also hence will certainly maintain the loft space at a continuous temperature level over the training course of the year. Because of this, it is perfect if the loft is used as a living area. Warm loft insulation can be found in different kinds, be it glass-wool or polystyrene. Spray foams can likewise be used, however in some cases may disagree.

Kinds of loft insulation

Blanket Insulation

One of the most usual kind of loft space insulation, this comes in rolls of rock, glass or mineral fiber (we utilize Earthwool by Knauf which is a truly good eco-friendly option), otherwise foil-backed really felt. It's normally the cheapest option as well as great all-purpose insulation, specifically for between joists. It's the easiest kind to fit but isn't suitable for the roofing system.

Loose-fill Insulation

This sort of insulation includes a loosened, lightweight, product, such as cork granules, cellulose fiber, mineral wool or even recycled newspaper. It can be made use of to cover up existing insulation or on its own. The main disadvantage is it isn't extremely secure and can be truly messy!

Sheet Insulation

Firm boards of either synthetic or natural products, this is the most effective remedy for protecting the underside of your roofing system. The boards offer extremely efficient insulation for your loft area and also can additionally be decorated over. The downside is that sheet insulation has a tendency to be the most pricey kind.

Blown-fibre Insulation

Loosened products of numerous kinds blown in between joists, this is ideal for hard-to-get-at places but does not offer a complete option, specifically in a draughty loft space. It's also costly and also requires to be set up by a specialist.

Anerley

Anerley is a district within the south east of London in the London Borough of Bromley. It is west of Bromley and it is 7 miles south south-east of Charing Cross. It's the former site of the Crystal Palace.

Anerley has never been its own independent entity, but always a general district. Just before the closure and relocation of the Crystal Palace to Penge Place at the top of Sydenham Hill, Anerley was an empty part of Penge Common that didn't develop till the 1800s. In 1827, a Scottish silk manufacturer, William Sanderson, bought land around the former Penge Common, and constructed the first house in the area. He named it 'Anerly', which is a Scottish word for 'solitary' or 'only', and also the road then became called Anerley Road plus the vicinity.

There are plenty of transport links in Anerley, including 9 bus routes, two A roads, two rail stations and one London Overground station and aTram station at Birkbeck station. Transport for London had proposed the extension of Tramlink services from Harrington Road tram stop to the bus station on Crystal Palace Parade by way of Anerley Road, but Mayor Boris Johnson cancelled the £170m extension in November 2008.

Notable persons that lived in Anerley include Thomas Crapper, who promoted the flush toilet, in his retirement; Walter de la Mare, popular poet and author of ghost stories; and James Leavey, award-winning Punch magazine columnist.

FAQs

how thick should loft insulation be?

Over the years there has been an increase in the recommended thickness of loft insulation by the government. Obviously, the reason behind this is pretty simply - the thicker the layer of your loft insulation the bigger your savings. The UK government is very keen to every house in the country to have loft insulation fitted where possible as it helps to minimize the heating demands of these properties. Households get to benefit from loft insulation in so many ways which includes reduced energy energy bills as well as having a home that stays at a more comfortable temperature for longer.

Generally, for the government energy efficiency is crucial as it implies that the highest demand ( which is usually the time of the day when gas or electricity use is at its peak ) reduces, since each building requires slightly less energy. Overall, that ultimately implies that new power plants don’t have to be built which is some nice cost savings for the government.

In the 1980’s, any thickness of loft insulation from 25 mm to 50 mm was considered the standard. But then, building regulations stated that homes should have as much as 100 mm of loft insulation. Over time, this gradually increased to 270mm for new builds and also recommended for other properties, although not essential. As a result of this, there’s always a need to check how much insulation you currently have in your loft before you decide to purchase more. You may discover that you already have something within the range of 20 mm to 200 mm up there and knowing this and the insulation values will assist in determining how much more you’ll need to purchase, if any at all. You should also note that some modern materials can offer the same thermal insulation whilst not being as thick.

how does loft insulation work?

A lot of an uninsulated property’s heat is lost through the roof and that’s even more alarming, when you realize this figure is up to a quarter of the total heat of the house. Hence, the tremendous importance of preventing this heat loss through loft insulation which will go a long way to help you against spending unnecessary thousands of pounds on heating bill as well as energy loss.

Loft insulation is an effective method to achieve the desired result, however the question is, how exactly does it work? Well, it’s time to find out!

Using either a fireplace or central heating to heat up your home, a large quantity of that heat would be lost through the roof of your home. Generally, heat rises and when it does, there’s simply no way to prevent it - it’s just science. Escaping by both the conduction and convection methods via your roof, the heat escaping through your ceiling, into the loft space and out into the open air outside can only be significantly reduced by laying loft insulation.

Generally, the added layer of insulation works by trapping the heat inside the room below the loft so as to enable the air within your house to stay warmer for longer. What’s more? The layer of insulation also keeps cold air from the outside from entering your home. As a result, you don’t have to heat your home as much in order to achieve the same temperature for each individual room. Over time, just by doing this you can potentially save hundreds pounds. Getting it installed in your home may actually seem a bit expensive at first, but it’s something that’ll eventually pay off.

How long does it take to install insulation?

How long it takes to install insulation will depend on the size of your property. In general, loft and cavity wall insulation can be installed in a day or two. External wall insulation will usually take longer to install. The rep or installer will be able to advise you when quoting for the job how long this will be.

how to insulate a loft roof?

Insulating your loft roof comes with a wide range of benefits. Not only do you get to maintain a comfortable temperature in your house for longer, but you’ll also get to cut down on your heating bills. If you wish to insulate your loft roof, you’ve come to the right place! This process can be very tedious and time consuming especially if you don’t what you’re doing or lack the required confidence to pull it off. It’s advisable to hire the services of a reputable professional who can guarantee the best results for help and also save you some time and money that can come from potentially costly errors.

Before you start rolling out, you’d have to make sure that all cracks, gaps and holes in the ceiling are filled with either a standard filler or decorators caulk. You can also clean between between the gaps in the joists thoroughly. And finally, check for hazards that can cause you problems before getting stated.

  • Remember to leave ventilation gaps as you start from the eaves. Then work towards the loft’s centre, starting from the point furthest from the hatch.
  • Lay the first layer between the joists which should be 100 mm and then the subsequent layer should be 170 mm to make it up to the recommended 270 mm.
  • Carry the electric cables above the insulation and work around visible light fittings.
  • Cut the roll in the centre of the floor when rolling out from the eaves on both sides with the help of a craft knife. Ensure that there are no gaps between the insulation and the joists’ edges.
  • Lag pipes as you go in order to prevent walking over the insulation to get back to them.
  • Ensure that the loft is totally insulated
  • Insulate the hatch.
