The sorts of roof insulation available depend on the sort of roofing that it will be used with. With an angled roof, either cozy or cool loft space insulation can be ideal. Cold loft space insulation is the cheapest alternative, merely including placing insulation over and also above wood joists. Nevertheless, as this only stops warmth escaping the living area of the home, it isn't ideal for those wanting to covert the loft space into a home. Warm loft space insulation is positioned straight under the roof covering, as well as thus will certainly keep the loft area at a constant temperature level throughout the year. Thus, it is best if the loft space is made use of as a living area. Warm loft insulation is available in various kinds, be it glass-wool or polystyrene. Spray foams can additionally be used, but in many cases may disagree.

Kinds of loft insulation

Blanket Insulation

One of the most usual form of loft space insulation, this comes in rolls of rock, glass or mineral fibre (we make use of Earthwool by Knauf which is a really great eco-friendly alternative), otherwise foil-backed really felt. It's normally the least expensive alternative and also good all-purpose insulation, specifically for between joists. It's the most convenient kind to fit yet isn't appropriate for the roofing system.

Loose-fill Insulation

This kind of insulation consists of a loosened, light-weight, product, such as cork granules, cellulose fiber, mineral wool or perhaps recycled paper. It can be utilized to top up existing insulation or on its own. The main disadvantage is it isn't really safe and also can be actually untidy!

Sheet Insulation

Company boards of either synthetic or natural materials, this is the best remedy for protecting the bottom of your roof. The boards provide extremely effective insulation for your loft space as well as can also be embellished over. The drawback is that sheet insulation often tends to be one of the most expensive type.

Blown-fibre Insulation

Loosened materials of various kinds blown in between joists, this is excellent for hard-to-get-at places but doesn't offer a complete remedy, particularly in a draughty loft. It's additionally pricey and also needs to be installed by a professional.

Abergwili

Abergwili is a community in Carmarthenshire, Wales. It has a population of 1612 and is also an electoral ward.

Abergwili is well-known for its Bishop's Palace, which has been home to the Bishop of St David's since 1542. It was erected between 1283 and 1291, when Thomas Bek was Bishop of St David's. The palace used to be a college of priests, and villagers knew it as a college until it joined with another to create Christ College in Breacon. It still has the chapel extended by Archbishop Laud in 1625. Carmarthenshire County Council aquired the palace in 1974 to use it as a museum, and they built the bishops a new dwelling in the grounds. Until 1802 there was a river called Towy running past the palace, but it changed course and left an oxbow lake. Now it contains lots of wildlife.

There is a public farm in Abergwili called Merlin's Hill Centre. It lies next to Merlin's Hill, and there is a footpath that goes right to the top. There is an Iron Age hillfort at the peak.

FAQs

how much loft insulation do I need?

Over the years, more and more home and property owners are beginning to realize the huge benefits that can be derived from loft insulation being a worthwhile investment. It’s quite worrisome the way in which energy bills have soared over the past 10 years and loft insulation is a considerable affordable energy efficiency measure that can go a long way to help increase your home’s energy savings.

As far back as the 1980’s, the standard when it comes to insulation thickness was 25 mm to 50 mm which was, at the time, considered to be sufficient. However, building regulations have changed the norm that now states that a new build needs to possess 270 mm of insulation in the loft in order to achieve the required u-value of less than 0.16/m2k based on the standard rock wool or sheep wool insulation.

Generally with loft insulation, there’s a law of depreciating returns which implies that the first couple of insulation centimetres will save you many times the cost of the installation, however an extra layer or centimetre is going to add less value to the point where it’ll no longer be wise or worthwhile to add any further centimetre. Therefore, with cheaper energy prices 30 years back, that additional couple of centimetres was not just worthwhile, but with the recent alarming rises in costs of fuel, that additional £10 savings per year has all of sudden changed to £30 which makes it become a lot more attractive.

If you already have 270 mm of loft insulation, regardless of the material you’re looking to add you’re most likely not going to benefit from a top up. The cost of the materials and installation will definitely be too high for the couple of pounds it’ll save you per year.

Will insulation save me money on my energy bills?

This depends on the amount of insulation already present in your property. However, adding insulation has been proven to improve the energy efficiency of your home and decrease your heating bills, this is more obvious in older properties or where single glazing is still in situ.

what is the best loft insulation?

If you have a loft, then the next thing that’s crucial is a loft insulation. Asides from cutting down on your carbon footprint, when you’re able to install an effective loft insulation you can slash your heating bills by up to £250 per year. What’s more? Besides making your home more energy efficient, it can also increase the value of your property a great deal. So if you’re also considering the insulation of your loft, one of the few things that comes to mind is, what loft insulation is the best to incorporate? In order to help you make the best informed decision possible, this post is going to address this issue and put you on the right path.

In truth, there’s no way to say exactly which type of insulation is the best as all types usually have a different purpose as well as usage. The insulation you choose for your home’s loft is be based largely on the how you’re going to make use of the space as well as any unique challenges you might face given the shape of your home’s loft. Below are some types of insulation to give you a better idea:

  • Blanket insulation. This is the most common type that comes in rolls of rock, glass or mineral fibre ( or foil-backed felt ). It normally the most affordable and also a good all-purpose insulation which is easy to fit although not suitable for the roof.
  • Loose-fill insulation. This type of insulation features a loose, lightweight material such as cork granules, cellulose fibre, mineral wool etc. It can either be incorporated as a top up or on its own. The primary drawback is it isn’t very secure and can also be very messy.
  • Sheet insulation. This is the best solution for the roof’s underside as it offers a highly effective insulation for your loft space and can also be decorated over. The drawback here is that it’s usually the most expensive type to purchase and install.
how to insulate a loft roof?

Insulating your loft roof comes with a wide range of benefits. Not only do you get to maintain a comfortable temperature in your house for longer, but you’ll also get to cut down on your heating bills. If you wish to insulate your loft roof, you’ve come to the right place! This process can be very tedious and time consuming especially if you don’t what you’re doing or lack the required confidence to pull it off. It’s advisable to hire the services of a reputable professional who can guarantee the best results for help and also save you some time and money that can come from potentially costly errors.

Before you start rolling out, you’d have to make sure that all cracks, gaps and holes in the ceiling are filled with either a standard filler or decorators caulk. You can also clean between between the gaps in the joists thoroughly. And finally, check for hazards that can cause you problems before getting stated.

  • Remember to leave ventilation gaps as you start from the eaves. Then work towards the loft’s centre, starting from the point furthest from the hatch.
  • Lay the first layer between the joists which should be 100 mm and then the subsequent layer should be 170 mm to make it up to the recommended 270 mm.
  • Carry the electric cables above the insulation and work around visible light fittings.
  • Cut the roll in the centre of the floor when rolling out from the eaves on both sides with the help of a craft knife. Ensure that there are no gaps between the insulation and the joists’ edges.
  • Lag pipes as you go in order to prevent walking over the insulation to get back to them.
  • Ensure that the loft is totally insulated
  • Insulate the hatch.
