Loft conversions are proving to be more and more popular in the UK. In most homes the attic accounts for unused space which will be put to better use. Converting can turn the area into a bedroom, bathroom, playroom or even ensuite bedroom.

In actual fact there's lots of potential to transforming your loft, such as extra value for your house which can be as much as 20%. Loft space conversions are also encouraged over a home extension for the reason that infrastructure is already in place. In addition, you won't be taking away any garden space.

If the loft conversion would benefit your property and you're interested in more room, review quotes from reputable companies within New Malden and get the best offer for the work you want completed.

New Malden

New Malden is a suburban area in southwest London, in the boroughs of Kingston and Merton. It lies 9.4 miles from Charing Cross, with close-by areas being Kingston upon Thames, Raynes Park, Surbiton, Tolworth, Wimbledon and Worcester Park. The town established wholly because of the coming of the railway when New Malden Railway Station opened in 1846 on the main line from Waterloo. The name comes from the former village of old Malden, which was 2 miles to the south of the town, which translates from Old English as 'the cross on the hill'. Construction of houses went off with a slow start, starting to accelerate nearer the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century after the construction of both two and three bed room terraced homes. From the 1930s, the development of detached and semi-detached homes began. The town is house to a wide array of social, sports and leisure activities. The Malden Centre is a sports centre containing a swimming pool, a gym and community facilities, along with offering adult learning courses. A football pitch, tennis courts, a kids's play ground, allotments and open space can be discovered at Beverley Park. In terms of shopping opportunities, the 15000 locals of Malden have a number of independent and nationwide shops in which to shop. Formed in 1913, Tudor Williams Ltd. is a family-run department store positioned in the High Street. The company has shops throughout England, most recently in Elphicks of Farnham and Knights of Reigate. Through the Christmas period of each year, the High Street is covered with lights, having its own switching-on event. For all your home upgrades, make sure to make use of reliable contractors in New Malden to make certain of quality.

FAQs

what is a hip to gable loft conversion?

This is a type of loft conversion that extends your roof on the sloping side. It is a great option to go for especially where a hipped roof effectively makes the usable floor area a lot smaller which can be a tricky affair when it comes to putting in a new staircase. Here, the roof is extended from the current ridge in such a way that it effectively fills the gap between them. As a result, this turns the hip (in a hipped roof) into a gable to create space in your roof for a loft conversion - hence the name “hip to gable.

The new gable can be done in whatever way that suits both your taste as well as your property. You can make the new gable construction in woods and then tiled to match your existing roof while you can also go for other options such as brick block pebbledash or rendering. You are also free to fit in a new window into the loft conversion end so as to allow for natural light into the loft space.

A hip to gable loft conversion is mostly found on both semi detached and end terrace buildings, particularly those constructed in the 1930s. Overall, this type of loft conversion is particularly ideal for homes that features a hipped roof and with a sloping roof at the side of the property. Some detached properties can also possess a hipped roof on the side - and as such, a double hip to gable loft conversion can also be deal as it’ll create more loft space for usage. If your home fits into the bill, then you should be aware that once the project is completed, you’ll have plenty of usable space available to both you and your loved ones.

an every house have a loft conversion?

If you’re having issues with the amount of space in your home and need an extra space without affecting your garden, loft conversion comes to mind. Not only is it a great solution to creating more living space within a home, but it’s also one of the most budget-friendly solutions you can count on to expand your space by thinking upwards rather than sideways. So if you’re thinking about converting your loft, one thing that almost immediately comes to mind is whether or not your house is suitable for loft conversion.

To answer the question of whether every house can have a loft conversion is a very simple one. Generally, not every house is suitable for loft conversion. This is due to the fact that each and every loft space - from the stairways below and floors to the rafters and the roof up above, is unique. Therefore, the best way to really figure out whether or not a house’s loft offers the potential for conversion is to get in touch with a loft specialist.

So what can make a house not suitable for a loft conversion? Let’s take a closer look!

✓ A house will not be suitable for a loft conversion if the height of the ceiling happens to be too low and it’ll not be possible to have it raised.

✓ If you do not own own the freehold to the loft space, you won’t be able to convert the loft. Surprisingly, this happens to be a common issue in London.

✓ You will not be able to convert your loft if you reside in a conservation area or in a listed building. But you can identify a design solution that’ll still comply with the conservation rules and keep planners happy.

how long does a loft conversion take?

If you’re about to carry out a loft conversion project, you’d probably be wondering how long it’ll take to complete the task. Well, you’re not alone! This is one of the most common questions when it comes to loft conversion projects, however, providing a set timeframe for completion of such projects is impossible as all loft conversions vary. There are different factors that can determine the duration of your project. These factors include, the materials to be used, the type of the proposed loft conversion, the kind of staircase you’ll like to have installed, the number of windows included, the number of rooms to be added as well as a number of other influencing factors. As a result of these variables, the milestones and timings provided are only to be taken as guidelines. If you’d really like to have a set date, you can get in touch with a professional for help.

Generally, it’ll take up to 8 weeks to complete a loft conversion project.

✓ The first week activities will include putting up scaffolding, receiving the first materials for the build and creating an opening in the roof to gain access to the loft space.

✓ In the second week, the structure of the roof will be ammended and more support added.

✓ Third week, the floor joists will be fitted, building of the loft conversion will start, completion of the external roof works and commencement of plumbing and electric works.

✓ Fourth week, complete the building, construct the loft floor, fit the roof windows, insulation, ventilation and internal stud walls.

✓ Fifth week, apply plaster and plasterboard to the room walls, create a staircase opening and fit the new staircase.

✓ Sixth week, plaster the staircase area, complete plumbing and electrical works, hang the doors, fit skirting, handrails and bannisters and start decoration.

✓ Seventh week, complete the decoration and clean and wipe out all wastes.

✓ Eight week, complete all the remaining tasks.

Can my loft be converted?

Many types of loft are suitable for a loft conversion. In general, you will need at least 2.3 metres of headroom in your existing loft. This is to make sure there is enough headroom after the conversion. Speak to a conversion specialist about the probability and possibility of doing this in your house.
