It had a population of 3,848 according to the 2001 census of the UK, resulting in the doubtful claim by some citizens that Bembridge is the biggest village in England. Bembridge is house to much of the Island's wealthiest residents. The population had actually reduced to 3,688 at the 2011 Census. Bembridge rests at the extreme eastern point of the Isle of Wight. Prior to land improvement the location of Bembridge and also Yaverland was practically an island, divided from the remainder of the Isle of Wight by Brading Haven. On the Joan Blaeu map of 1665, Bembridge is shown as Binbridge I?le, almost separated from the remainder of Wight by River Yar. Before the Victorian era Bembridge was a collection of wooden huts as well as farmhouses, which only combined into a real village with the building of the church in 1827 (later on reconstructed in 1846).
