What Does a Turf Treatment Option Involve?

Depending on the type of treatment required, the method of application differs.

Some treatments options, such as grass feed as well as fungicides are sprayed onto grass, taking care to cover affected as well as wanted locations. After these treatments have been used its advised that lawn isn't sprinkled afterwards, ideally for a couple of days, to permit the products to pass through the turf.

  1. Scarification as well as aeration are hand-operated tasks, involving physically manoeuvring specialist devices across the turf to break up and get rid of thatch that restrains turf development. Some clean-up may be called for after that to remove undesirable thatch and also soil plugs.
  2. Topdressing is additionally a hand-operated procedure, layering an organic blend of composted materials across the lawn to include nutrients, complied with by cleaning or raking into the ground to make certain infiltration.
  3. Nematodes are additionally applied through a splashing procedure, however as they are living organisms, numerous specialists advise watering the lawn prior to their application to make sure that there suffices dampness in the dirt for them to permeate the ground and also prosper.
  4. Overseeding - To prepare a grass for overseeding, it's suggested that the area is either raked prior to application if there is little thatch, or scarification may be required for more overlooked lawns-- This will enable the lawn seeds greater contact with the dirt, permitting more effective germination. As soon as the grass is ready, overseeding does not call for machinery; rather, the products can be hand sown right into the wanted areas.

Usual grass troubles

Sadly, lawn problems are not rare as well as several home owners battle to restore a usable turf regardless of regular mowing. Below is a listing of one of the most usual grass issues:

  • Infrequent mowing: inappropriate mowing can trigger severe turf damage. The suitable height for lawn is 2.5 centimeters and if you go below this you take the chance of the turf passing away in addition to scorching from the sun. If you do not feel great cutting your grass it is possible to employ a professional. To find out more see our overview to grass cutting prices.
  • Undesirable weeds on grass: Surprisingly, some weeds can be fairly appealing yet despite their look, they require to be removed before your turf suffers. They need nutrients as well as water to expand and obtain these by stealing from your turf, triggering damages to your grass. Weeds are extremely typical but with the right treatments they can be a distant memory.
  • Insects: Frustratingly, grass bugs can be extremely typical and cause damages to your grass if left unattended. Usual pests include leather jackets, ants, moles, worms and chafer grubs.
  • Moss: Moss is really typical, usually shows up when lawns are mown as well brief and also loves protected, wet areas. Can be properly eliminated with raking.
  • Grass illness: There are several types of lawn condition that not only affect the look of grass but can trigger damages to the roots and also the blades of lawn themselves. Usual types consist of fairy rings (a fungal disease), fallen leave curse as well as corrosion illness.
  • Dry areas: Throughout summertime when warmer weather is common, grass can dry out creating spots of discoloured, passing away turf. Constant watering is a must especially when there has actually been no rain for a while.
  • Mushrooms: Although you may not desire mushrooms expanding in your back garden, they are in fact a clear indicator of a all-natural, healthy grass. The downside to mushrooms is that they can be poisonous to people and also animals consequently picking or cutting to eliminate them is a excellent idea, specifically if you have children and also pet dogs.

FAQs

When is the best time to start a lawn renovation?

First and foremost, to save your time and money when it comes to lawn renovation, there’s a huge need to figure out why the lawn isn’t doing well in the first place. A lot of times, when changes are made to the basic lawn care practices, cultural practices or site conditions, any need for a renovation would be thrown out the window as the lawn would be given a new life with good health and vigour. However, if you feel renovation is the best option for your lawn, then you’ve come to the right place! In this post, we’re going to consider the best time to start a lawn renovation to help put you on the right path. Let’s take a look!

There are two times during the year that are most suitable for lawn renovation. Firstly, the best time for renovation of a lawn is usually from mid-August to mid-September. Secondly, another great time to achieve this goal is normally during early spring as the lawn is starting to turn green and grow.

So, when do you consider lawn renovation?

  • When the quality of the lawn is simply poor and unacceptable.
  • During the introduction of lower maintenance turf varieties into an existing lawn.
  • When 30% to 50% of the lawn is dead or is experiencing sparse growth which may be due to several factors like drought and heat, low soil fertility, insect damage, moderate soil compaction and more.
  • When the lawn is soft and spongy will walking across. Plus, if it also responds terribly to the application of fertilizer and water.
  • When grassy weeds or broad-leaved weeds covers about 30 to 40 percent of the lawn area with insufficient turf cover to fill in the bare areas once the weed removal is done.
How to overseed a lawn?

Overseeding your lawn is an essential part of keeping your lawn looking its best. It’s also known as reseeding, and helps to repair damaged areas that might have been caused by a harsh summer or winter. It’s best to overseed your lawn during the spring or autumn, when the temperature is mild but there’s still a fair amount of rainy days to help the grass seed grow. To prepare your lawn for overseeding, you should do the following things around 1-2 weeks beforehand:

  • Weed the lawn by hand or using a weedkiller (make sure you leave enough time to do this according to the instructions)
  • Remove stones and large twigs
  • Scarify your lawn to remove moss and loosen soil
  • Fertilise the soil with a quick-release fertiliser

Once you’ve taken these steps, you’re ready to start overseeding your lawn.

  1. Mow your lawn to around 25mm in length.
  2. Water the soil so it’s moist but not too damp.
  3. Sprinkle your new grass seed evenly over the lawn, but apply more in patchy or thin areas. Generally gardeners say to use 35g per square metre, but up to 50g on thin areas.

When you’re finished, give your lawn a final water, and do this every day until the new grass is established – particularly if it’s not rained. Just make sure you don’t overwater it. It’s also a good idea not to walk on your lawn for around 2-3 weeks after you’ve overseeded it.

How to level a garden and lawn?

Our gardens are often our pride and joy, so we want them to look their best. If you notice that your garden is uneven, you’ll probably want to do something about it. But how do you level your garden or lawn? A gardener can help you do this and will get the best finish, but if you want to have a go at doing it yourself there are a few steps you can take. Before you start, make sure you’ve got all the following equipment to hand:

  • String line
  • 4 rods & string
  • Tape measure
  • Flat shovel
  • Water sprinkler or watering can
  • A rake
  • Earthmoving and compacting equipment
  • Spirit level
  • 2 x 4 piece of wood
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Protective gloves and shoes

Then, you can get ready to level your garden.

  1. Mark out the area Push 4 rods into the ground around the area you want to level out in a square or rectangle. Tie your string around the rods to connect them all together, ensuring that the string stays tight. Then use your string line to any of the 4 sides to check that it’s level. You’ll then need to measure the height from the ground to the string on all four sides to check how much you would need to adjust the ground to make it level. Make sure you take note of the high and low spots and measure the difference between these spots.
  2. Water the ground to soften it If you want to level your lawn, or the part of your garden that you want to level has grass on it, you’ll need to uproot the ground underneath it. To make it easier to dig and lift out the grass, sprinkle some water over the area before you begin. It’s a good idea to do this over a few days to really soften it – but make sure you don’t do it so much that it becomes too heavy and soggy.
  3. Remove the grass Push your flat shovel into the ground, around 3-6cm deep, then slide the shovel horizontally to lift out the soil and the grass on top. As you repeat this process around the entire area, make sure you try to lift out the soil evenly to avoid making your levelling task even harder.
  4. Add soil Fill low spots with nutrient-rich soil and spread evenly over the area with a rake. If you’re levelling out a large area of your garden, consider renting earthmoving equipment to make it easier.
  5. Flatten the soil Next you’ll want to compact the soil to protect it from erosion. If you’re working on a small garden or area of your garden, simply use your feet – get stomping on that ground! You could also use a rake, but for larger gardens consider hiring a compactor. Then, leave the soil to settle for around 3 weeks before doing anything. If you’re doing this in the summer, you can water it sparingly to keep it from drying out.
  6. Adjust until you’re happy It might take you a few adjustments to get the level of your garden or lawn right. Use a spirit level along a long 2 x 4 piece of wood to see whether the ground is even, then adjust by adding a little more soil or removing soil until it’s at the level you want it.

That’s it. A gardener or landscaping company will be able to level your garden or lawn perfectly, so consider getting some quotes from local companies.

How do I aerate my lawn?

Aeration, like scarification, is another vital step to keeping your lawn looking healthy and vibrant. It involves making small holes in the soil to allow air, water and nutrients to get into the grass roots, helping them to grow deeply, and produce a much stronger lawn. It also helps to relieve compaction from the soil, which stops nutrients and air from circulating. But how do you aerate your lawn?

Before you start to aerate your lawn, it’s a good idea to scarify it first to get rid of any moss, dead grass and thatch. This involves vigorously raking your lawn to get all the organic matter up, then transferring it to your compost heap or disposing of it. Light scarification is best in the spring but you can heavily scarify it in the autumn.

If you’ve got a small lawn, you can use a hand-held hollow tine aerator or even a normal garden fork. Dig deep into your lawn’s surface with the fork, or push the aerator into the ground which will pull plugs, or cores, of soil out of the ground to create air holes. You can let the cores dry and then go over them with a lawn mower or rake to spread them evenly across your lawn. This will recycle all the nutrients in those parts of the soil and stimulate bacterial activity to break down unwanted thatch. Don’t leave them, because they will make your lawn look bumpy over time.

If you’ve got a larger lawn, you might find it easier to see if you can hire a petrol aerator. But there are also rolling aerators that have spikes on a cylinder and you just push along, or even aerator sandals that you can wear and just go to town on your grass!
