Some treatment options, such as lawn feed and also fungicides are sprayed onto grass, taking care to cover damaged and preferred areas. After these treatment options have actually been applied its advised that turf isn't sprinkled later on, preferably for a couple of days, to enable the products to permeate the grass.

  1. Scarification as well as oygenation are manual work, including physically manoeuvring expert tools across the grass to break up as well as get rid of thatch that restrains turf growth. Some clean-up may be needed after that to get rid of unwanted thatch as well as soil plugs.
  2. Topdressing is also a hand-operated procedure, layering an organic mixture of composted materials throughout the turf to include nutrients, followed by brushing or raking right into the ground to make certain penetration.
  3. Nematodes are also applied via a splashing process, yet as they are living microorganisms, lots of professionals suggest sprinkling the lawn before their application to make sure that there is enough moisture in the soil for them to pass through the ground and grow.
  4. Overseeding - To prepare a turf for overseeding, it's suggested that the area is either raked prior to application if there is little thatch, or scarification might be needed for more disregarded lawns-- This will certainly allow the lawn seeds higher contact with the dirt, permitting more effective germination. When the grass prepares, overseeding does not require equipment; rather, the products can be hand planted into the wanted locations.

Typical turf troubles

Regrettably, grass problems are not uncommon as well as many house owners struggle to salvage a functional grass regardless of routine mowing. Below is a listing of one of the most usual grass issues:

  • Infrequent mowing: inappropriate mowing can trigger serious grass damage. The optimal height for grass is 2.5 centimeters as well as if you go listed below this you run the risk of the turf dying as well as burning from the sunlight. If you do not feel confident cutting your grass it is feasible to employ a professional. For more information see our guide to turf cutting costs.
  • Undesirable weeds on lawn: Surprisingly, some weeds can be rather eye-catching yet despite their look, they need to be eliminated before your lawn experiences. They require nutrients as well as water to expand and also obtain these by stealing from your lawn, causing damage to your grass. Weeds are really usual yet with the proper treatments options they can be a distant memory.
  • Insects: Frustratingly, turf insects can be extremely usual as well as create damages to your grass if left untreated. Usual insects include natural leather coats, ants, moles, worms and also chafer grubs.
  • Moss: Moss is very usual, generally shows up when grass are trimmed as well short and likes sheltered, moist areas. Can be properly gotten rid of with raking.
  • Lawn disease: There are many types of turf illness that not only impact the look of lawns yet can trigger damage to the origins as well as the blades of turf themselves. Typical kinds consist of fairy rings (a fungal condition), leaf affliction and rust illness.
  • Dry areas: Throughout summertime when warmer weather is common, grass can dry creating patches of discoloured, dying turf. Constant watering is a have to especially when there has been no rainfall for a while.
  • Fungus: Although you may not desire mushrooms expanding in your garden, they are actually a clear sign of a all-natural, healthy grass. The disadvantage to mushrooms is that they can be dangerous to people and pets consequently selecting or cutting to eliminate them is a great idea, specifically if you have little ones and also animals.

FAQs

how to level a sloping lawn?

Uneven lawn? Well, for an outdoor space which looks great and serves its purpose throughout the year, there’s a need to learn how to level your garden. While its best left for a professional to handle, there are also some simple steps you can follow to ensure your DIY task turns out a success whether you’re preparing to lay a patio or deck, landscaping the whole space or tackling a lumpy lawn. A level ground comes with a bunch of benefits which includes maximizing the functions of your yard, helping with drainage while also enhancing your property’s curb appeal. Good news is, you can level your sloping lawn by hand. Want to know how? In this post, we’re going to take you through the processes involved in levelling an uneven lawn. Let’s take a look!

You can simply level your lawn using your hand if you aim to make your lawn a more even surface or to install a patio or deck. If your goal is only to make the lawn more even, you should have it in mind that, even though lumps and bumps aren’t always pleasing for most people, it can actually create a good drainage for your home.

Top dressing is the solution for depressions that are about 2cm to 3cm deep. To resolve this, simply get a top dressing mixture or make yours using two parts of sand and topsoil and a single part of compost. Use this to fill out the depression evenly and make compact using a rake or your feet, then water. Leave this for two days before applying grass seed alongside a thin layer of topsoil, then water as needed.

If you have a deeper depression, simply dig out to around 4cm to 5cm and remove any lumps of soil or stones. Once done, proceed to top dressing as explained above and grass seed to fill out the bald spot.

How to level a garden and lawn?

Our gardens are often our pride and joy, so we want them to look their best. If you notice that your garden is uneven, you’ll probably want to do something about it. But how do you level your garden or lawn? A gardener can help you do this and will get the best finish, but if you want to have a go at doing it yourself there are a few steps you can take. Before you start, make sure you’ve got all the following equipment to hand:

  • String line
  • 4 rods & string
  • Tape measure
  • Flat shovel
  • Water sprinkler or watering can
  • A rake
  • Earthmoving and compacting equipment
  • Spirit level
  • 2 x 4 piece of wood
  • Wheelbarrow
  • Protective gloves and shoes

Then, you can get ready to level your garden.

  1. Mark out the area Push 4 rods into the ground around the area you want to level out in a square or rectangle. Tie your string around the rods to connect them all together, ensuring that the string stays tight. Then use your string line to any of the 4 sides to check that it’s level. You’ll then need to measure the height from the ground to the string on all four sides to check how much you would need to adjust the ground to make it level. Make sure you take note of the high and low spots and measure the difference between these spots.
  2. Water the ground to soften it If you want to level your lawn, or the part of your garden that you want to level has grass on it, you’ll need to uproot the ground underneath it. To make it easier to dig and lift out the grass, sprinkle some water over the area before you begin. It’s a good idea to do this over a few days to really soften it – but make sure you don’t do it so much that it becomes too heavy and soggy.
  3. Remove the grass Push your flat shovel into the ground, around 3-6cm deep, then slide the shovel horizontally to lift out the soil and the grass on top. As you repeat this process around the entire area, make sure you try to lift out the soil evenly to avoid making your levelling task even harder.
  4. Add soil Fill low spots with nutrient-rich soil and spread evenly over the area with a rake. If you’re levelling out a large area of your garden, consider renting earthmoving equipment to make it easier.
  5. Flatten the soil Next you’ll want to compact the soil to protect it from erosion. If you’re working on a small garden or area of your garden, simply use your feet – get stomping on that ground! You could also use a rake, but for larger gardens consider hiring a compactor. Then, leave the soil to settle for around 3 weeks before doing anything. If you’re doing this in the summer, you can water it sparingly to keep it from drying out.
  6. Adjust until you’re happy It might take you a few adjustments to get the level of your garden or lawn right. Use a spirit level along a long 2 x 4 piece of wood to see whether the ground is even, then adjust by adding a little more soil or removing soil until it’s at the level you want it.

That’s it. A gardener or landscaping company will be able to level your garden or lawn perfectly, so consider getting some quotes from local companies.

how to lay a lawn?

Laying a lawn is a task that’s best left to the professionals especially if you don’t know what you’re doing. However, if you can follow a simple logical process, you’ll save yourself a lot of headache – simply start from the edge and work inwards. If you’re looking to lay your lawn by yourself, then you’ve come to the right place! In this post, we’re going to consider the processes involved in lawn installation in order to ensure your project turns out a success. Let’s take a look!

Firstly, the tools you’re going to need to lay your lawn includes the following – sturdy boots, gardening gloves (should be thick), wheel barrow, garden fork or rotovator, landscaping rake, laying boards, knife or edge trimmer, hosepipe and broom.

  1. Start from the outside edge. Install the initial strips horizontally overlapping the boundary a bit (trim the back once done). Press down carefully to make sure there’s a good contact with the soil (make sure not to squash the lawn).
  2. Proceed to lay the adjacent pieces till the first row of the lawn along the entire edge is completed.
  3. Continue with the next row. If there’s a need to stand on the laid turf, simply make use of a plank so as to avoid squashing or denting the turf. It’s important to ensure the successive rows are staggered to prevent the short edges from lining up.
  4. Proceed by butting and pushing the edges to create a tight joint (make sure the turf is not stretched).
  5. Use a wood saw or sharp serrated knife to trim any untidy edges. Remember to make use of a plank to ensure you do not walk directly on the turf.
  6. Water the newly installed turf adequately to ensure the water penetrates the soil. However, do not turn it into a mud bath.
Will scarifying make the lawn better?

Everyone wants a good-looking lawn! If you’re wondering the best time to scarify your lawn, then you’ve come to the right place! In this post, we’re going to consider this in order to help you make the best-informed decision possible. Let’s take a look!

The short and simple answer to this question is when your grass is actively growing. This is the best time to scarify a lawn as it enables it to recover faster once it has been scarified. What’s more? The conditions also have to be appropriate as extreme weather condition, be it too cold, too warm, too dry or too hot, will hinder the quick and proper recovery of your lawn. It’s also important to take note that scarifying of a lawn is going to leave the soil exposed which makes way for weed and other unwanted plants to grow.

During the year, there are two different times which tends to provide the most ideal conditions to scarify a lawn. The first of these periods is late March or April when the spring is in the air and your grass receives all the warmth and moisture it needs to thrive. It’s also advisable not to wait till too late in the spring as right after this period comes the heat and dryness of summer. Furthermore, the lawn shouldn’t be scarified too heavily during the spring as summer usually comes with weed seeds which means your grass won’t recover fast enough and weeds will quickly make way for themselves.

If you wish to scarify your lawn heavily, then the perfect time to do this would be in September or October – during autumn. During this period, the summer weed seeds would be gone and the grass will grow properly.
