Lanark is a village in the central belt of Scotland. The name is thought ahead from the Cumbric Lanerc suggesting "clear area, glade". Lanark is traditionally the county town of Lanarkshire, though there are several bigger communities in the county. Lanark railway station and coach station have constant services to Glasgow. There is little industry in Lanark as well as some residents commute to work in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Its stores offer the regional agricultural community as well as surrounding villages. There is a big modern animals auction market on the outskirts of the town. An irreversible military existence was developed in the town with the completion of Winston Barracks in the 1930s.
