St Columb
St Columb Major is a town and also civil parish in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom. Often referred to locally as St Columb, it is roughly seven miles (11 kilometres) southwest of Wadebridge as well as six miles (10 kilometres) east of Newquay. The designation Significant identifies it from the neighboring settlement and parish of St Columb Minor on the shore. An electoral ward merely named St Columb exists with a population at the 2011 census of 5,050. Two times a year the community plays host to "tossing", a medieval video game when typical throughout Cornwall and now just played in St Columb and St Ives. It is used Shrove Tuesday and afterwards again on the Saturday eleven days later. The game includes 2 groups of several hundred individuals (the 'townsmen' and the 'fellow citizens') that endeavour to bring a silver round made of apple wood to goals set 2 miles (3 kilometres) apart, making the parish, around 25 square miles (65 km2) in area, the de facto biggest sporting activities ground in the world.
